Cross stitching on clothing?

I like to embelish my children's clothes with cross-stitch motifs and am looking for new ways to do this. When working on linen I work directly on the fabric, but for other fabrics I use the material that you wet afterward and pull out the threads. I would like to be able to transfer the grid onto the fabric instead, is that possible?
