Do you prefer amp or stomp box distortion? I bet tube amp distortion is better than stomp boxes distortion but maybe using stomp boxes a wider range of sounds is reachable.

I'd say nothing beats a real amp. I use Sansamp TRI AC, and it simulates three types of amps; Fender, Marshall and Mesa Boogie and it's fine for its price. However it has a slight metallic tone to it which doesn't sound quite natural, and I'm not satisfied with its clean tones. Good for a gig, but I'd still go with an amp.

Generally I prefer the distortion of the amp but it dipends from the amp that I use. I haven't a good amp so the distortion is not good, but when I play with another amp the distortion is better.

Yeah, it depends on the amp. A cheap solid state amp has usually a bad distortion so it's better a stomp box, but I think it will never be like playing in a tube amp... I love the Marshall JCM800 distortion heard on Zakk Wylde Pride & Glory album...

I like tube amp which use EL84 tubes that can be better sound quality.the 6L6 tube is also good but lack some overtone.
