Domestic Garbage Separation! Is it worth it?

I don't know how does it work in other countries, but here you're supposed to separate your garbage, putting paper in one place, plastic in another, glass in another, etc.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't separate, i ask you if this work is being put to good use? are they recycling? or not?
