Our town recently had a smoking ban put into place. I am a smoker, trying to quit. Even if I do quit I still think it is taking our rights away. I am trying to look at this from both sides though. I feel like we as smokers should have a right to smoke in public places that have designated smoking areas. However I also feel that people who can't tolerate the smell, or have a health issue are also losing their rights. I think either way it is looked at someone is losing out! It just upsets me that there isn't some sort of a compromise. Shouldn't each privately owned establishment get to choose if they want to allow smoking and have all city and state ran areas be smoke free? I.E. public parks, zoo's, government buildings and land. I know one business here has already lost 25% of their sales. Does anybody else have an opinion on this? I would love to hear!

Smokers have the right to smoke. They can do all the damage in the world to their lungs, and it doesn't bother me in the least bit. That is of course, until I'm forced to breathe their secondhand in. Smoking sections in restaurants were the equivalent of pissing sections in public pools. The nasty air and nasty water are still going to affect those who don't care to be around it. Smoking bans are a great idea. If you really get down to it, everyone is going to benefit from this. Non smokers don't have to deal with second hand smoke, and smokers will be forced not to smoke, which is better for them in the long run anyways. Is it fair? Well, it wasn't fair when non smokers had to endure smoking before there were non-smoking sections. It wasn't fair when there were non smoking sections because some people couldn't smoke where they wanted to, and others still had to endure the lingering stench that circulated through the air. And now it's still not fair because non smokers have to listen to smokers whine about not being able to smoke anywhere. All fairness and whine-bagging aside, it's healthier, so it's the right choice.

I think it's a matter of you can't please everyone all the time so they have to go with majority rules. I do believe the decision to have or not have smoking sections should be up to the owners of privately owned establishments. Non-smokers always have the right to not patronize this business place. I am a smoker too and I have no problem with going outside to smoke, but it is getting to the point that in some places you cannot even do this! I'm sorry but I don't think smoking outside should be banned.
