What do you feel about serving in the defence forces. How are the pay and perks , the postings and family life. What say you people is it worth a try.

I would advise you to join the defence services only if you are really commited to the task; the pay and perks in the defence is very good and so are other value added services, however the postins are a big problem as we can be transfered in any nook and corner of the country.

i am a Marine wife and i can tell you a few things... life in the military: -you are never settled in one place. you will move every few years and sometimes it will be to other countries. -you rely on military doctors and health care, which isn't always the best...we have not had problems, but some people have... -as a spouse, you are always attached to your wife/husband. you need them, or a power of attorney to be able to do anything on base, get an ID card, parking pass, make a dr appt. seriously. -you will go through many periods of seperation. depeding on the job, you will have deployments. my husband spent 6-7months in iraq in 2005. he made about 4 small deployments in 2006, about 3weeks a peice. he will be gone for about 6-7 months in 2007. he's leaving next week for a tour of the western pacific. while he is gone ALL things about our life is on me, just me. i will lose my partner for half a year. dinner and dishes, all done by me. bill paying, dog walking, baby care, house cleaning, ANYTHING that needs done. i can't say "hey honey, it's your turn". now, i'm a tough chick, so i can handle it, but i've seen marriages end b/c of depoyments. -the pay sucks. the best paid are probably the air force and they have the easiest and quickest basic training, too. my husband get spaid probably $10-$20,000 less per year than someone with the SAME job in the private sector, and that person doesn't have to deal with deployments. -perks, you get to experience new cultures, new friends wherever you go. free healthcare and housing is always provided, usually, but it's not free...you do pay for it, but utilities are usually free. we like the military life, but it's not for everyone. it's a choice that your wholefamily needs to be involved in...notjust you. take care.

i think it is worth a try esp for one who has never seen that life closely. people dont generally know much about the army adn hence they do not think of it a s a career option...
