Interacial dating. Whats the big deal?

One of my longest and best friends is Asian and is being pressured to marry within her community. She has a very caring male caucasian friend with whome they get along with very well. she's always so happy when she talks of him and they have a great time as friends. He told her he was interested in dating her but she turned him down because her parents would not allow an interacial marriage in their family. Why is interacial marraige a taboo to some people in this century? Ever been in this situation? advice.
