We took my son to this this movie yesterday and I wish that I had not. It was so sad! We bought the book last week and did not get a chance to read it all the way through. I didn't bother reading reviews (my own fault) thinking that this was a good imaginative kids movie and it would be light hearted. This is not the case. The movie covers issues that may even be higher than a PG movie rating - being very poor, bullies, abuse, and death. My son is 8 and he said that if he had known how sad the movie was going to be, he would not have asked to go see it. Be prepared to cry (and you kids to) if you take them to see this.

Is it worth a watch? I was actually planning to see it this weekend. Should I watch it? Is it good (not from a child's perspective, just generally)?

Check the reviews out for yourself before making a decision. If I had read the yahoo reviews prior to viewing the movie, we would not have gone. http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809420332/user

Maybe the social issues are more apparent to an adult reading the book? I am not sure, but the movie does highlight that the familiy poor and struggles to pay their bills.

Yeah I have seen it it starts off so good and then it ends up so sad. I liked it but I agree if you don't like sad movies or if you have young kids it is really not worth seeing.

I am not familiar with the book nor the movie, but from what it sounds like you took him to a movie about true/real life but just didn't know what you were getting into so that you would be ready to deal with any questions or thoughts. I know that in your area there is much torment not to mention the family issues. But there are times in which a person needs to see a film maybe like that so they can put their own life back in perspective.

I was going to take the kids to see that, now I won't. I feel the same way about the Harry Potter movies. My kids are 7,9 and 11 and I think the potter movies are very dark. They are getting worse with each one too. Kids minds are very impressionable and the movies are much more vivid and dramatic than books, as books use their imaginations to fill in the pictures.

I am actually going to play the Devil's advocate here. I actually thought that it was best movie on positive thinking that I have seen in a long long time. I would actually recommend showing this movie to all pre-teens, of course, you might want to explain a few concepts during the movie to the kids to keep them inspired about it. As the movie says "Just close your eyes, but keep an open mind." Cheers! Ram
