How wonderful that he's able to get a guide dog! That will be a tremendous help to him, not only for guiding, but having a faithful 'friend' by his side. I am so sorry to hear that he had those problems with the bus and all.
I personally haven't had a guide dog, but I did know a fellow in his 20's that had one. He told me a lot of his experiences and we talked often about his dog. He told me that it's most important that while the dog is in his harness that he mustn't let people pet him. When he is under harness he is at work and his job is to be with his master and to help him. When the dog was out of his harness, it was OK for me to pet him and play with him. I appreciated him educating me on this because I didn't know, and most people don't either.
He told me his dog gave him the confidence to be independent. It was an amazing thing to see him and the dog out on the street, the dog guiding him and stopping him at the appropriate places (by the road, etc.)
Don't be too worried about learning about this new transition. Let your excitement and spirit of adventure about it be felt by your son so that his confidence will be increased. It is a joyous thing that he will have this highly trained animal keeping him safe wherever he goes. I wish you both well on your new adventure! Please start another post once he's had the dog for a while and keep us updated!

First off, I am real sorry to hear of the problems your son has faced and faces with the gradual loss of sight in his eyes. I do hope that a guide dog will have improve the situation and help him get around with less incidents.
I don't know anyone personally with a guide dog but there are a few elderly folk in my neighbourhood that I often see out and about with the aid of their guide dogs.
