How do you refer to your children?

I got slammed in a chatroom awhile ago for refering to my children as rodents. I have no idea how it started but it's what I've always called them. They are rodents when I'm happy with them and monsters when I'm not.
I don't mean anything offensive by it at all. It's just the term I use.
For example: I'll say to my friend.. the rodents and I went out for lunch today.
or.. my monsters spent most of today in time out for arguing with each other.

Some people just have no sense of humor! I've called my bunch: monkeys, rugrats, munchkins and the zoo crew. If pet names are said with love and respect what's the big deal? I can understand if someone was name calling to be hurtful, but not if it's used as a term of endearment. My husband and my oldest daughter call each other "zipperhead". My daughter thinks it's hilarious, but she's got an oddball sense of humor like me.

When all mine were younger they were the Ragamuffins and I always numbered my children no1 daughter ect. That way people would know which child I referred to as I have 3 daughters and 1 son. Now I only have 2 living at home one is The Brat and the other is Gargage Disposal Unit. For some reason my son goes through lots of growth spurts and is always eating so hence the name.

I call my daughter "Bobby" even though her name is not even close to that I have no idea why it is just something I have called her since she was very young and I call my son Dude.
But when they are my nerves and have been crazy all day I will tell people "Mark's children" did blah blah today.
I have no idea why someone else would get upset over the nicknames you gave your children, esp. since your children know that when you call them rodents you actually mean it in the most loving manner.

Everybody has little names for their kids I'm pretty sure. Like munchkin or goblins etc. I don't think it should matter, unless you actually hate your kids and think they are rodents

lol, I think that's rather cute. I tend to use to word munchkins. I think we all have terms of endearment for our children and I don't understand why one would take offense to it. Our children know we're just teasing them. I have definitely used the word monsters with mine when they misbehave. I think this is probably one of the more common ones, lol

Oh I just love this one!!! We all have our silly pet names that we use to refer to our children. My husband refers to one daughter as Princess and the other daughter as Angel. It makes it easy to give gifts that have that title on them. So now the girls have pillows, diaries, notebooks, backpacks, t-shirts, etc. that have their pet names on them. Hahaha, one of the girls even has a collection of tiara's. The one we got her for her 15th birthday lights up and blinks. She wore it to high school all day long and everyone knew it was her birthday.
The older children were nicknamed Pumpkin and Loner.

Oh, and by the way, they always know when they are in BIG trouble cause I call them by their whole entire name.
Two of my children have a first, middle and last name.
One child has a military rank, a first name, two middle names and a last name.
And one child is married so she gets called by her first name, two middle names, maiden name and married name.
How I address the children lets them know what the status is at the moment. Now the grandchildren are learning how to read the signs that they might possibly in trouble. LOL
And the grandchildren are "Jewels of my Sunset". They have not yet earned any unusual nicknames.

lol.. I remember seeing a Bill Cosby special about Kids say the darnedest things..
He asked this one little boy why he thought his mom sometimes called him by his full name and he replied to warn us that we better hide whatever we aren't supposed to be doing before she sees it..
I can't even tell you how long ago that was but I'll never forget it.

OMG! What a silly thing for someone to jump on you about. In my house we call them all monkeys. They each have their individual nick names but if we need them to something as a group we call them monkeys (ie, get in the car monkeys). We call my 4 year old "Gus" because when she was little she looked like the mouse from Cinderella. I put it down under the nickname section of her pre school registration and it confused the heck out of the school. They even listed her in the directory as "Gus ____" Don't let it bother ya, as long as you know you love them that's all that counts.

That is beautiful. Names can be harmful if one doesn't watch. My mom would call us by our full name if we were in trouble. It sure made me sit up and take notice.

I think its cute to have terms of endearment for your kids. My kids are adults now age 22 and 27, but I referred to them as rugrats when they were younger. They understood 'rugrats' as an endearing term. Something I called them in an affectionate way. As long as your children understand 'rodent' as being an affectionate name for them (and it sounds like they understand your affectionate nickname for them) then I see no problem with it. Keep calling them 'rodents' and 'monsters' and have a great day.

I’m afraid we are very boring with our nicknames, our daughter gets online miss 10, or whatever year she is, I’ve been talking online since she was a Miss 3. In the real life, hubby calls her a little monkey, she hates it, so it is a teasing point between them.

I personally don't see what all the fuss is about. It's just a term and it's not like you meant anything by it. It's just a word. I think people need to relax a bit and stop trying to take things so literally.

Hi, I know that you dont mean anything by that, but I have to admit that the terms you use are a bit harsh.
I mean rodents is basically rats. Even though you dont mean anything by that. But it may hurt your kids one day. In my religion, I believe that many of our sins are started by our mouth. Whatever we said may be a sins. So by saying that your kids are rodents it is like wishing that they are rodents. It may have no effect nowadays, but it may have effect later on in their behaviour, in their way of thinking, in their way of respecting themselves etc. I know that you dont mean anything by that, but maybe you could find a term that are more endearment? just a simple suggestion. My own parents always call me by name, or my nicknames that are similar to my actual name. :)

They each do have there own nickname. But in general when I'm talking about them I refer to them as rodents.. as in the rodents and I are going out for dinner today.. or when we are out for a walk and they are off and running... I'll yell out.. stay in site rodents..

I think someone is just being overly sensitive. You run into a lot of people like that. I call my kids the same thing as my numerous friends...My Freaky Darlings. My children and my friends are so different in their own way. It kind of reminds me of that move LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN because we have our own specialties and we all help out. For example, when another friend finally gets onboard with MySpace, I tell them, "welcome to the collective of My Freaky Darlings!"
