Why are accessories so expensive?

I was looking for a purse, not any old purse mind you, I had a certain criteria that I was searching for...something on the larger size, slouchy and with a long wide strap. I went into several stores and found one (non leather) one that I thought would fit the bill...unfortunately it was a little too pricey for me ($50-), so on to the next store. I found some leather ones that looked like the type I was after, but alas, much too expensive! (Over $100-!! one was over $200!)
I finally went into a local big box store and found one for $9.99 (which I purchased). I am the type of person that changes purses probably about every 2 or 3 weeks...why are these things soooooo expensive?
I have noticed this about costume jewelry also...sometimes, I can get sterling silver at a cheaper price than if it were costume!
Am I just being too naive? What gives?

I have stopped paying full price for a pocketbook. My husband gripes when I buy yet another one. The last one that I bought was a leather bag for $3.50 at the Goodwill Store. It is a great bag! No flaws or stains. I have been using it since before Christmas of last year and it should last for quite a bit longer.
I don't fret about jewelry. I will make a necklace and matching bracelet if I really want to have one that is a certain color. You can also find good buys on jewelry at the Goodwill Store or other discount stores too.

That is another great option: resale stores. I have shopped everywhere from Goodwill to upscale resale stores and you can find wonderful, reasonably priced things at both.

I don't know if Canada has a Kohls store or not, but they have reasonable prices on clothing and accessories. Every month they have a sale in addition to 10% off coupons. Also, Bealls has great sales on purses and usually half-price on sterling silver.

Yes accessories are definetly expensive and i have a problem when i find a great purse in brown or black that i want both the black and the brown always and the same with shoes (but thats a whole other shopping problem) anyways it always seems silly to me with purses to spend so much im always thinking well i could buy the purse and then i have no money to put in it or i could keep the purse i have and actually have some money to spend on something else. Anyways you can find some good deals sometimes and i usually wait now until i find things on sale because it seems like everything goes on sale eventually, i got a great purse at smart set that was originally $48.00 but there was a sidewalk sale at the mall and it was on sale for $9.99. Anyways happy shopping

I agree with you, I work at Old Navy and we get new purses in all the time. The prices seem to be a little bit more resonable in the store. The nicer the bag, the more it cost. I'm just like you i change my purse either to go with my outfit or just to change up everyone ina while. I have several coach bags(for example) I never purchased one myself, but those bags are so expensive, even the small ones cost alot.
I don't know why accessories are so high these days, it's unbelieveable how theses stores can charge all this money for these items.

Are you looking where you normally find them?
Prices come from a wide range, mainly the brand and how the qulity of the finished product. seriously tho, $50 - £25 i wouldn't by myself a wallet for that price no matter how it look, length. (not being funny to you)
I honestly don't get why things have a high price tag on but keep looking your bound to come across one you like for less. =)
Somethings are worth it and some aren't.
I'm not going to answer you questions at the bottom as i think your not. opps i just did.
Kudos!

A lot of factors go into merchandise pricing. One is name and branding- if you're in a higher end brand, you're going to pay more for the label. Accessories are priced in line with what ever the merchandise in the store is- if it's higher end, the price of the bag or shoes will be higher.
Accessories are suspect to being very expensive items because they are typically made out of more expensive materials (leather, animal skin, high quality toggles, etc) and these materials are difficult to work with. Any handcrafted piece of leather work has taken considerable time and money to create- the same goes for other artisianal pieces.
As far as why non-handcrafted pieces are expensive, the answer is simply supply and demand. You will always have those that will pay more for handbags and shoes than others, and they will always have the expensive shoes and bags to fufill this need.

You're just shopping at all the wrong stores, it seems. I usually get my purses at Wal-Mart or Old Navy. I'd never spend more than $20 on one.

maybe you are also choosing the branded or signatured items that cost as high as you mentioned. there are a lot of accessories like for purse that have a lesser value with good quality & fashionable. if you are a fashion dresser you can always grab less cost items by making some window shopping first or shop when the items you want are on sale already. you can recycle your other stuffs to do matchings or color combinations with mix & match that will come out to be still in fashion. there are a lot of sterling or plated accessories that may look very brilliant like the real jewels that you can grab at some department stores at only $3-10. try to bring out your creative side in accessorizing 'coz you may make you own jewelries too or those made up from beads or crystals.
