Should the visitor bureaus target g*y people for tourism?

Cleveland visitors bureau is hoping to bring g*y visitors to the city by designing a travel guide that features g*y owned businesses along with other attractions. The Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland has contacted the L*sbian G*y Bis*xual Transgender Community Center of Greater Cleveland for their help in the content and design. Also asked for help in the distribution of the guide. Supposed to be done in 2007. There are about 65 cities that have made such an attemp to attract tourists that are g*y. They say that that think that they should welcome everyone with open arms. Opponents say they should concentrate more on families attractions. Tourism officials say that they need to be sure that the gay travelers are safe and comfortable. Thinking a rainbow flag decal on the door of a business for identification. So do we really need to tailor our tourism dollars on such a thing?

I don't see a problem with it. If it brings in people, money and jobs then why not, I think families have been targeted for years. Personally, they can alternate years targeting groups or do both once the initial LGBT push is done, since generally the initial push is where the cost comes in.

But would homosexuals really be more apt to go to a place promoting them instead of just going to a place they want to see? It wouldn't make any difference to me one way or the other. They're are still people who will discriminate against them regardless. And I think bringing attention to the homosexuals in the community may create an adverse effect. I hate it but our country still has a long way to go with sexuality discrimination.

If we are all to be treated equal, then isnt this sora discrimination? If seems that they are just trying to hard to prove that they are not discriminating against the L*sbian G*y Bis*xual Transgender Community.

I don't see a problem with it. Many city and state visitor bureaus will have displays or information for certain ethnic groups. They want to show that they are open to everyone, that there is something for everyone. It's a marketing ploy is all. They just want to get people into the city for travel. It's to bring in money. If they can show to any target group that they have the guides available showing what is there that would attract them then they are more likely to get them in and thus generate revenue. It's all about the all mighty dollar and the best way to bring it to them. That's all it is.

Okay, at first I thought that g*y meant goy, and I was trying to figure out why they would want to target the goyim (I've never seen gay written as g*y...is there a reason for that?) From a marketing perspective, I think they have it right. Why not target a demographic that by and large has more disposable income? It's a great idea, money-wise. They did a campaign like this in Philly a year or so ago and there was a lot of support for it.

If you look major companies have been doing this for years for one reason whether they are gay or lesbian but mostly gay males is because they have two incomes and will most likely never have kids so companies figuire try to get the money out of them some how. Why not let cities do the same. Have you ever noticed most game shows have a gay or lesbian on them to draw veiwers. I f you look at the percentage of the population they are and the amout of money and effort made for them there is a huge disproportional amount.

I've been a professional travel agent for the last 20 years and the most lucrative market has always been the Gay/Lesbian. Cities focus on them because they have the most disposable income of all travellers. They tend to have high paying jobs and more often than not they're not raising children which affords them a very comfortable way of life. I live in Montreal where the Gays and Lesbians have added to the already diverse culture that we have. They are very lucrative for the hospitality industry as a whole. They will dine in the best restaurants and stay at the best hotels. Tourism is big business and vital for the survival of many cities worldwide and the ones that have campaigns in place that focus on the Gay/Lesbian market are the ones reaping the benefits. I mean Las Vegas goes out their way to attract the rich gamblers so why shouldn't tourism campaigns focus on certain groups. That is not discrimination it's smart business. My answer is yes, you should tailor your tourism dollars to attract the best possible kind of tourist, financially speaking!

With any tourist resort, everyone should be catered for whether you are of different nationality, colour, race, sexuality, no differentiation should be made and guides should include everything from children to nightclubs, from restaurants to gay public houses. At the end of the day is doesn't matter who or what you are, your money is the same and countries that rely on the tourists shouldn't neglect a group of people just because of their sexuality, their money is just as good as anyone elses!

I believe so too. Was curious if the pinpointing of target audience was warranted. Thanks for responding.

I think things like this only encourgages prejudces. If we keep seperating homosexuals, black people, hispanic people, ECT then we're just promoting prejudce instead of unity. That's my opinon anyway. If we keep looking at people as being different instead of as people then we're never going to grow. And that is sad.

Gay people have money to spend on tourism too, and I think Cleveland is smart trying to appeal to them also. They try to appeal to all segments of society, and if they want more tourism dollars, they have to go to a wider scope of people. It's just smart business sense.

anybody with money is worth targeting that is how business works, the only people who have a problem with this would be people who don't liek to make money :P
