I would rather die for a cause than for an illusion called 'my country'. For example, my brother has been a citizen of US for over 25 yrs. What is his country? his adopted country US? or native country? In the good old days, 'my country' had a special meaning in the mind's eye. But today, everything is changed. The old sentimental values have gone. People are materialistic everywhere. So, I trust human values that i have built up. Rather give your life for a friend or cause than 'country'.

I'm with bhchy, I can't give an honest answer unless I'm faced with it, but I have a feeling, I wouldn't.

I would rather die for a cause or a friend than 'my country'. Its simply because the old world values I was brought up with, have simply vanished! society has completely changed in my country. If I am forced to join the army, then, as you said I would be willing to fight for my country, but as far as possible I will avoid being killed. Sorry, my old concept of 'Bharat Matha'(mother india) use to be very holy and glorious, but it is very distorted now. Those were the days of 'Bhagat singh' and other revolutionaries would give up their life at a mere word against their country. Now it(bharat matha) has become a picture of and old and wrinkled hag! Individually, I place more value on friends and causes.
