Peanut Butter! Good food or poison??

Well, by now we've all checked out our peanut butter supply. I can't match the winning lottery numbers, but I sure can match the losing peanut butter code numbers! We had consumed half the jar, but luckily we didn't get sick. It really scares me when "healthy" foods become dangerous to eat. Fresh spinach, peanut butter, melon, and tonight I saw a blurb on the news about a natural cat food that can be purchased over the internet. It is being "recalled" and, supposedly, if you handled it or changed the litter box, you could be at risk. What is happening with our food supply? I would think, with the modern-day food handling technology, that food would be safer. But, just the opposite!! What can we, as consumers, do to protect ourselves and our families? How can we be sure that what we buy won't bring us harm? Is anyone else concerned about this?
