what is behind a smile

what do you think is behind a smile? - i have a friend who smiles only when he is set for taking a picture.

Smile in a picture is rarely a real smile. My husband is the complete opposite he smiles all the time but when it comes to a picture he will not do it. He says it looks to forced and he does not look natural.
