Today I seen a huge black ant on my bed.Its minus 10 out there.I thought they all went dorment in the winter-like flies do.Im going to look pretty funny going to the hardware store asking for ant bait in February.Have you ever had them and how do you get rid of them this time of year?If I put ant bait outside it will feed.I dont think ants will eat frozen poison.

Huge black ants are carpenter ants. If you see one on your bed there are many more hidden in the beams and wood in your house. They chew up wood. According to various information on the web, they are the most difficult ants to get rid off.
The Canadian Government has a site www.PestcontrolCanada.com, with information on carpenter ants, but there are many others that suggest various methods to get rid of them. Good luck.

I was just about to post that they might be carpenter ants but thought I'd read all the posts first. There was an episode of Holmes on Homes where he found carpenter ants in a wall of a house.

very strange to find ants in winter since they are usually dormant, but before to use antiants you have to maintain cleaning of house and do not leave any food remants on floor and try to seal off any holes in the walls
