In something that'll make you a profit at the very basic level.
Most banks offer many ways, I don't know your country so I couldn't offer any real suggestions. All my financies are looked after by my brother who happens to run his finaical advice company. :)

"Best" depends on where you live, how much $ you have to invest, your time frame, your tolerance for risk, etc.
For people without a lot of money and financial knowledge, sotck mutual funds such as an S&P 500 index fund are a low-cost way to participate in the stock market without investing a lot. YOu can also buy small amounts of individual stock; ones that pay dividends can pay you income while you're waiting for the share value to increase.

With a lot of research. If you don't know what you're getting into you won't know how to get yourself out. I think real estate is probably a worth while investment if you have the time, money, and will to manage it.

Well of course buying land is the best way, but not everyone can afford to do so.
I can't say what is the best way.
I can tell you what I invest in.
Stocks, HYIP, and autosurf for now. I know many people say what I am doing are too risky to do. But millions of people that invest in stock is also at risk.
I forgot mention, not sure if this is consider big investments but buying treasury bonds and waiting it out for a few years. http://bizmanfirst.pbwiki.com for information on hyip and autosurf
