Animations are fun, but not always. I have seen many people upload animated gif files on to their profile picture and in particular in mylot this is high, which basically distracts you from reading the other most sensible discussions.
Why do people do all this gimmicks? Is it to attract attention or distract attentive readers?
Please share your opinion.

well........it depends on what website u r accessing.......at an online book store....animated GIFs are sure a pain in da a**.....every student looking for books would naturally read almost everything on dat page.....so why do this useless farce.........???
but at gaming sites........properly designed animated GIF's are good for givin a first hand description abt any small game...........
GIFs are manageable, but the unnecessary Flash movies at sum places really gets on my nerves......a page that could load in about 7-8 secs takes about 40 secs to load...........
so, its my sincere advise to all those web developers out there........plz use ur brain a bit effectively.......n don't make a good page trash by giving the right content in the wrong place..........:)

I don't think its to get more attention, jut different people like different things. As for animation being distrating I also think thats a personal thing, it doesn't bother me at all.

maybe it will make them to be easier remember by us, but for me that avatar is nothing, I rarelly saw people avatar, just ignore them, in some forum I just turn off the avatar option, besides it's lighten my load speed, it also makes me don't know their avatar at all, just imho.

well i think you are right , when animation is put just for the heck of it its very disturbing, and should be curbed, its like adding a lot of colour and making something appear goddy
