The highest point from the sea level is Mount Everest (Chomolungma) from the Himalayas, situated between Nepal and China.
The highest mountain from its base to its top is (I belive) Mauna Kea, from Hawaii, measuring over 10 000 m, but most of this mountain is underwater.

The highest mountain in the world is Mount Everest on the border of Nepal and Tibet at 29,028 ft. First scaled by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
