awww, i love that pic of the baby and "i enjoy life". the little ones really do enjoy life, don't they?
anyway...back to your question.
i used to work at wal-mart, so i have a "different" kind of view.
i was in management at walmart for quite a while and i happen to know that they set themselves up for a lot of loss in favor of "customer service".
i worked in a store that had NO loss prevention AT ALL. when i say loss prevention, i mean, "security personnel".
now, even w/ LP there, it's hard to catch someone stealing and even if a customer would have walked up to me and told me they saw another customer pocket merchandise, i couldn't do anything unless I saw them do it myself.
see, walmart is very strict about it's policies on LP b/c everyone gets very excited at the thought of sueing the big smiley face. so, if i stop someone, i had better be 100% positive that they stole. if not, i could lose my job. seriously, it's happened.
SO, if i saw someone steal at wal-mart, well, i may tell an associate or manager if they are close by, but most likely i wouldn't do anything b/c i know that walmart, probably, wouldn't do anything.
now, if i saw someone pocket a DVD and they gave me that look like "oh, you just saw me do that!". i'd say, "i think you have enough sense to put that back." and i'd walk away.
i suppose i got a bit desensitized to the whole thing. it wasn't about right and wrong anymore, it was about what could be proved and not proved.
what would you do??
take care!

i bet it is difficult to have to think "will i be insulted" when thinking about everything you do.
i am lucky b/c that has never crossed my mind. i have never had to think, "should i do the right thing and get chastized b/c of my race?", or "should i step back and let the bad happen b/c i don't want to be yelled at and belittled?"
i feel for you and thank you for opening my eyes to something very serious.
take care.

My feeling is, if I have to pay for an item so does the next guy. So it would peeve me to see someone stealing. We all pay for shoplifters whether we want to believe it or not. I would report it to management and then if they chose not to do anything about it, that's on them, but at least I'll be able to sleep at night.

I would notify a clerk. I do think stealing is ethically wrong. It is also forbidden by law. People stealing from stores harm me as well. The prices go up because of it. Also society use resourses to prevent stealing that could have been put to better use. i believe it will serve as a deterrent to most people if they are actually cauight stealing. Maybe they'll think twice about doing it again.
