Personally I don't see any point in correcting the errors done in history in terms of seeking justice. I've seen the movie "Roots" portraying the experiences of the blacks. It was really terrible. To live in the past and to think of justice and even revenge will only rob us of our present enjoyment in life. Let the past stay where it belongs, the past.

I have another question for you then, what is your race and age and location ( North or South- in America) and if your people were subjected to some sort of mistreatment. and also if they were, would you want some sort of apology or something of value from the people who did it? thanks

I have to agree with you... Further there is a selective sense of history when it comes to slavery, true the white man did buy slave, but I would like to point out the operative word is buy, the slaves were sold to the white man buy african kings. Yes both sides were equally wrong however, again, equally wrong. Further, and I realize this is calous but is there any black person who would trade their life here in the united states for one in Africa. Yes, was completely wrong but at the same time has had a less than diliterious effect on say condelisa rice, colan powal or any of the thousands of americans of african decent who influence the culture of the united states today. In the way of reparations, submit affirmitive action. warmest regards to all.

I see what you are saying. though I wonder what the continent would be like w/o colonization. and the slaves were bought just like mahattan island was bought, with an unfair wage. ( the gold given to the kings were off African land- it was stolen) the treatment of black slaves is the worst in recorded history and I think that may be a reason it's such a big deal. ( getting lynched for learning to read?)

Dear Friends, Would those of you who were personally at one point or another enslaved please come forward and post I think your ideas and thought would be particularly valuable. So for those of you not reading between the lines. It's a new millenium by about 7 years... come on folks... really, it's a new time. at what point will will the white man be let off the hook? seriously, oportunity abounds for everyone in the uniteds states, If you have any doubts about this please visit a country like Turkey. If you are born poor... there is no oportunity, and overwhelmingly little possiblity you will be able to even attain middle class. warmest regards to all.

true in other countries there are not as many opprotunities for the underclasses as there are in America. at the same (I am not making excuses for blacks, I am stating how some of us feel and the reality that some have to experience), have you ever had an annual income of 80k+, 800 score credit, owning a home ( no mtg.) and still denied a home eqitity loan ? nope. but my father has. and what reason is it but that he's black? he has the finances etc. why would he be denied? you don't know because you don't personally particapate in discrimination ( I can tell by your responses) but others do. what should we say to them ? that it is ok to hate? that it is ok to allow personal prejudices get in the way of civic duty and fairness? no the old way should be challegened and the oppressed should be given opprotunity. don't you agree? also if you. your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents, were enslaved. what would you want done about it?

I think everyone can find a wrong to right in the past of their family or group. I think it is better to look for positive attributes to move up in life with. It is better to praise the light than to curse the darkness. It is the vessel which carries hatred that is harmed.

I understand what you are saying.. there are many positive things that have shaped the world and caused it to be what it is today.

I am American Indian. Yes,my people have been enslaved by the white man. They have stolen our land and our horses. But they can't steal our spirit. No,I do not want justice. I pity the white man. For they did not realize what they were doing when they did it.

Richard Wright, a black author said that we should "go easy" on white people cause they historically they do wrong to everyone, even themselves. he said that we kinda have to pity them, and be nice even though they've done all these terrible things.

I am an American, my great grandparents on both sides of me are immigrants from different countries, so it would be hard to keep track of who did them wrong or what they did wrong. I focus on today, I can't change the past and what happened.

that's true there are lots of different races that have through tragic experiences. and it would be hard and almost stupid to attack descendants of a group of people for the past.

Interestingly, slavery was not distinguished by color or creed until settlers from Europe colonised primarily negroid inhabited lands. This lead to the misconception that slavery is the lot of the blacks, when in fact, it had been practiced in Europe for hundreds of years prior to this. The abolishment of slavery happened chiefly in countries and territories where blacks made up the greatest number of slaves, and consequently, they were seen as bearing the brunt of this trade. Like it or not, everyone, black, white, or asian, is where they are today due to the suffering of their ancestors, be it 100 or 500 years ago. I do not think that any racial group has legitimate claim to justice, just as you cannot be held responsible for your ancestors crimes. Sure, many things have been done in the past due to ignorance, but what is the excuse today?

I like what you said. and I've said it myself lots of times. In America Blacks often have the misconception that we are the only group that has ever been treated in inhumane ways. although outside of the Irish, I don't think anyone else has ever been counted and actually considered 3/4 human, stripped of their original culture, not just hung but lynched, and continues to go through such strange relapse of "slavery". There have been whole social systems geared at just destroying Blacks ( as there have been for Native Americans. and often if you do not directly partake in these systems they would seem not only foreign to you, you would also question their validity. as to your question, I'm not sure if it is directed to the oppressed or the oppressor, please exlplain
