Have you researched your family tree? How far back did it go?My dad and grandad have researched mine and have gone back quite a distance. I suppose its easier when your family have stayed in one place over time. What I want to know from you is whether there is any value in researching your family tree? Sure, it is good to know where you came from but its all in the past. Shouldn't we be looking into the future? Why weren't our ancestors more interested in keeping their family history? Wouldn't it be easier if every generation kept a log of their family (sort of like a census but family specific) If only information was passed down to each generation as it was happening, the compliation of family information would make for a great family souvenir.

If we were allowed in my country to go and take a look at the archives..i would know better my ancestors. But for now,we know this:my mother's side of the family is romanian since the begining of time :).As for my father's side...that's tricky becouse we know that we came here from Austria...and that the first one (from my family )who got here was some kind of captain in the romanian army(around 1600). I now realise that I am more interested in my gf's family tree than mine lol.Her family was a noble family,"sent" here from Hungary ,when part of this country was under ausrto-hungarian ocupation. But then comunism came and they've burned her family's papers, took their land, etc etc.Pity..but almost all hungarian family experienced the same thing.Burning down family papers, rearranging new papers, etc. The state has stolen their identities and there is nothing anyone can do about it now. I just hope that didn't happen to my family, too.

I am researching my husband's right now. It's impossible to search mine since we are new country and was a colony for centuries, all the data would 've been lost because of the war and nobody bothered recording it. My husband's though has a good chance to get better records
