I think internet chats shoudn't be restricted at workplace. such communication allows people to stay in touch with their friends/family. Most employees live away from home & spend the better part of the day in office. chatting allows them to stay connected with their loved ones while they work...as long as this doesn't really cause any interruption.

i will strictly protest i-chats during the work hours.i believe office hour is alloted to u to concentrate on ur work and not on your family, friends and relatives.if you like chating with your loved ones so much during your workk cause you are missing them too much then its better to sit at home and have a nice time with your loved ones rather than misusing your precious time.

There is nothing wrong with chatting on the internet at work with friends and loved ones providing it is done in the lunch hour and doesn't cause disturbance or a nuisance to others, as long as people do not obviously chat when they are supposed to be working. As long as people are sensible then I can't see this being a problem.

yes, i believe they should be restricted at work, because internet chatting is not an official business, so engaging in that while in the confines of your workplace is like cheating, in a way, because you're using the company's computer, electricity, and time.

but what about those new theories of treating employees as a human being rather than just a labor? what about taking in concern their needs too along with achieving organisation's objectives?

I do not think it should be stopped completely but it must then be used with integrity, but unfortunately some peoplealways spiol everything for others and over use it. I think if you do anything else but work in work time, you are steeling from the company, you are being payed for your time, not your work. I know this sound harsh but it is reality. If people want to spent time on internet chats, they should do in intheir lunch hour. I would probably be the cruel boss, fortunately I'm not the boss.

Pleasure on the edge of danger is sweet...and i take chatting in the internet as such... LOL am currently employed in a call center company and we have individual clients. By that I mean that if my client won't be giving me any workload for the day then I got to slack around. Expectedly, our managing director has been telling us not to log in to any internet chat thingy, but what does he expect me to do for the whole day? glue my eyes on my monitor without doing anything? and so i broke the rules.. LOL i don't have anything important to be interrupted by my chatting anyways. :)

If internet chat is allowed, it must have some negatvie effect to your work, at least you will be distratced away from your work when you get incoming messages. It may be fine if it is during your break time or when you get nothing to do, but the problem is it is hard to control how much time they will spend on chatting if it is not restricted and the working efficiency may be affected..
But personally i want to chat on the net becasue I am lazy.lol..

I think it should only because it would distract you away from your job. You are there to do your job not chat on the internet. I think on your break or lunch would be fine to chat but not while your employer is paying you to work.

I know some offices that band internet chats but in my office, it doesn't because we have clients that we've got to deal with everyday. Well, the management has this rule not to chat with anyone not related to our work but because everyone in the office are rule breakers, we not only chat our clients but also our friends and family as well. lol. Yes, i agree that chatting allows you to connect to other people, so why should it be restricted in the office, right? :)

I dont think internet chat should be restricted at work cause where living in a new world. For as long as the work is prioritised first than chatting this will not be a problem i guess.Chatting while at work is hard to avoid especially if your working in an IT company. You're expected to work in front of the computer all the time so i guess its just very boaring if you will just focus on your work in that long hours of work.Im in an IT company and here we're allowed to chat but we were told to finish our job first before chatting. We dont see any problem here as long us both of us know how to discipline our selves and dont take advantage on this previledge.

You are not at work to chat on the net with friends and family. I know that if I were the employer and I caught an employee on the net chatting that would say to me that they really don't care and they are not interested in the job. Even on lunch break. There are a lot of sensitive material that can be passed around through chat rooms and chat programs. If you are at work then you should work. And if you feel that you have a lot of down time there than talk to you boss. It will show your initiative and might help you in the long run!

I feel while totally banning internet chatting at Workplace is not useful and employees may resist such a move ; there should be limited hours for people to do chatting .
No Limits would also lead to misuse of the Internet facilities provided by the Companies .

Well i think yes internet chat has to be restiricted at work cos a work place is serious business and one would not want to give a wrong impression to seniors or collegues that they are the only ones doing hard work and we are just busy chatting but hey chatting for work is a totally different scenario and talking on the internet to friends is a completely different matter as that is your own time and one is free enuf to spend it any ways one likes but i guess now a days internet is so much part of ones life that one is normally online through some chat applet or other and bots and wannabe's are everywhere but at work they need to be restricted that again is my personal opinion
