Driving in icy weather

A couple nights ago I put my car into the ditch due to icy roads. This was the first time this happened to me and the 20 seconds that it took to finally get planted in the ditch seemed like a couple minutes. I just kept turning my steering wheel this way and that but it did nothing. What is a driver supposed to do under These circumstances?

I found out it isn't just the steering that counts. My son who just turned 16 was in the car with me a few days ago in a snowstorm. He said MOM TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE BRAKE!! It made all the difference. As soon as I got my foot off the brake, I was able to steer out of the skid and stay out of the ditch. I have been in the ditch 3 times in the last 15 years.

Hmmm how horrible, my car went out of control once on some oil I think, I remembered seeing on the television someone saying you should always turn your wheel in the direction the car is going which I did and it did become controllable on ict roads I don't know that could be different...I am glad you are ok...
