I heard some superstitious belief about black cat. I don't know if it is true or not. That when you're walking and a black cat cross your way, it brings bad luck. How can this beautiful cat, brings bad luck. It does not make any sense. Have you heard of this superstition?

I have at least 3 black cats around the house and nothing bad is happening. Even though I have heard of some superstitions about black cats, here's what I've heard:
If the black cat walked from left to right in front of your path, it means good luck. If the black cat walked from right to left in front of your path, it means bad luck.
In some countries, black cats are considered a bad omen in European and Western countries because of the black cat associated to witches back in those times. In other countries such as Japan, they consider the black cat as a good luck and fortune and the Chinese think of it as a way to lure good business into their stores.
As far as I know, they are as cuddly as any cat out there and there's no need to worry about this superstitions.

I was unaware that any country saw the black cat as a positive icon. I know the egyptians seemed fond of cats, but that was the only one I was aware of. Thanks for the additional info! :-)

It is an old superstition when europeans believed that black cats were witches cats. I have two beautiful black cats and I would not part with them. Don't believe that stupidity. My cats do not bring bad luck to anyone. Cats cannot do that.

I heard about this. It is quite common. I suppose like all superstition there was a logical reason for it starting. I will give you some examples. Let us pretend you are an ancient Roman or an ancient Celt.
You are driving your chariot or your cart and suddenly there is a squeak, the chariot or the cart crashes into the tree. You are walking along at night, there are no stars in the sky, and suddenly there is a squeal and you trip over a black cat, and land on top of a stone, knocking yourself over, and some robbers steal your purse.
So it is in response to something that happened to someone thousands of years ago, and blamed the cat for him not lookiing where he was going.

I have heard of that superstition and it's rediculous! That superstition goes back centuries ago when they were considered evil and wereaccused of being witches "familiar's".I have two black cats in my lifetime and have never had bad luck from them walking in front of me.

It's a superstition and that is all. It goes back to the period of the witch hunt, when black cats were associated with witches, and therefore evil. I had a black cat for 15 years, and he never brought me bad luck. and anyways is there such a thing as a real black cat anyway? my black cat had about ten little white pieces of fur on his back in the shape of a 'c'. I have never seen a black cat that did not have a little teeny bit of white on him.

My cat, who is black, would keep me trapped in my house if I believed in that superstition. LOL!
But, yeah, I've heard of this superstition. Seems silly to me. But I grew up with lots of pets. About the worst luck was stepping in something the dog left in the yard.

I've heard of this one and always thought it to be foolish as well. It does go back to the time of the witch hunts when the black cat was imagined to be a witch's familiar and in league with demons. That if one crossed your path that it was because the witch sent it so you would be cursed. It's foolishness but still lingers to this day.

This is a very famous superstition.. there a lot many of superstitions related to black cats. those r all so ridiculous.. its probably because black is always considered an evil color.
All fantacy stories have given vampires & witches black clothes to wear. Its like a uniform of evil people.:p
Its all so ridiculous if people in this 20th century still belive in such sruff..
Well crossing the path of people with such beliefs will surely be Unlucky for the cat ;p.(God save the cat)
Stray Black cats r often treated harsh some even throw stones at 'em to keep em away.
:p Sometimes when I see a black cat I walk near by & try if I can get some bad luck.. NEVER worked actually :(
I think BLACK CATS ARE REALLY COOL..if u watch them closely, Mostly they appear more active compared to other cats..
I just love black cats...Black cats have always been an attraction to me. I hate such superstitions..
what u say?
Lolz Some new stories with black cats as heores might change the situation a bit I guss..
Like 'BLACK CAT SAVES THE WORLD'..

I have heard this superstition, used to cross m windshield 3 times whenever one would cross my path in my car, and I have also lived through the bad luck. It is merely a superstition like everyone has already told you. The history of this superstition has already been noted before me as well, so nothing left but to admit that I have a black cat!
