Did you seek professional help? Did you get medications? Did it get rid of your depression and are you okay now? I met someone whose mother was always depressed and he would ask her why and she really didn't know why. She's been going back and forth to the hospital, sometimes overdosing on meds. I wonder why that happens.

I think that the reasons of depression are first physiological. Some people are inclined to depress. All the events and circumstances around are just triggers. Sometimes, depressive people become so irritable that it takes nothing to make them sad. So, the real reasons are inside the brain itself.

I used to have depression more or less for many years. Of course we need friends and good relationships but it is very important to give our brain the food it needs. That is omega3 fats. More than 60% of our brain is fat and it needs omega3 to work properly.
The experts recommend three to four fish meals a week but the most efficient is cold pressed fish oil. I take three calpsules of cold pressed salmon oil every day.
After starting with the salmon oil regularly it was like a miracle, I am much happier, more concentrated, have better memory, more creative and more patient with people.
I have a gratitude stone where I can see it every day several times, and it is there just so that I remember to think of things I am greatful for - and it really makes me feel a lot better to do that.

I have dealt with depressions for years. I lost my dad when I was 12 years old and I still miss him today, just as much. I was also buliied throughout my school years which didn't help much either. When I got older, I was also treated badly from other adults who were supposed to be friends or co-workers. I went to counseling and to my doctor for help in dealing with it. He gave me some medication, but it didn't help me any. I quit taking it.
I met my husband back in 1992 and he has really been there for me and helped me to work through my depression stages. I am feeling better these days but some days I still get down in the dumps when I think back to the times I had that were so hard. I just wish no one had to ever be depressed and feel useless. It sure isn't a good feeling at all.

There are so many reasons why people suffer from depression. I think I good place to start is to see a counselor or a doctor or both. If you can get to the root of your problem or at least put your feet in the right direction, your better off than ignoring it, or hoping it will go away. I personally have been on several different medications and somedays I cannot tell you why I feel the way I do either. I think we all have our ups and downs, some worse than others and some of us need extra help getting through it all. I have good days and bad days. The meds I take do an awful number on my stomach, but most of them do - to me at least. Hope that helps.

I have treatment resistant depression. Basically, my depression has failed to respond to at least four different medications. Why am I depressed? Sometimes, it's simply a matter of an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Depression is the most common mental/mood disorder, but it is the most misunderstood disorder. Many people view people with depression as being weak because they are unable to "shake off" the sadness. I believe it is for this reason that while depression is the most treatable of mood disorders, it is grossly underdiagnosed because sufferers refuse to seek treatment because of the stigma. Medication alone is not a cure all for depression. Depression often responds to a combination of medication, therapy, behavior modification and psycho-educational skills such as identifying dangerous behaviors, signs and symptoms of worsening depression, and developing a social/support network. Physical activity, exercise, diet, good physical health all play roles in the treatment of depression.
It doesn't surprise me that your friend's mother cannot pinpoint why she is depressed. Asking why someone is depressed is akin to asking a wall why it is standing 90 degrees to the ground. It just is. Perhaps, instead of your friend asking his mother why she's depressed, he can assist her in getting exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, seeing her doctor regularly, maybe even dispensing medications to her if she is repeatedly overdosing on meds. Having a loved one with depression takes time, patience, and support. Good luck to him.
