Iam a college student. I rely totally on my pocket money.
Few days back I went uptown (I live in the suburbs of a metro) with my friend to buy some books, A computer component and A fish for my aquarium. I wanted to buy a pair of sneakers specially made for running (Jogging). But it was not in my that particular days budget(only cash). Any way I wanted to know about the brands available and their costs so that I can can plan my next shopping. And i dropped by a shop and asked for what i was looking for. After i got the necessiary information I started to leave saying that I would come back that evening to make a purchase.
Now what happens is, The shop keeper wants us to make a purchase or pay the advance. He dint want us to leave without a purchase. I was annoyed.
He gave me a cheap look. Said some thing unpleasant. It hurt me. I walked out with my friend saying nothing. It took me more than three days to come over that insult or embarrassment i don't know how to describe that feeling. But I was hurt.
1. Was I wrong or was the shop keeper?
2. Don't I have the right to walk out of a shop with out a purchase?
3. What would have you felt like if you were in my situation.
This discussion is open to any kinna response.
Thank you

That shopkeeper was SOOOO WRONG!!! If I were you, I'd NEVER go there again. You have an absolute right to go into ANY store without making a purchase. I'm pretty shy, but I would've told him right there that he had lost my business, and all my friends' business right then. I would have not only told everyone I know about his rudeness, but everyone that I ever met who was wanting to buy some shoes!
I had something, not quite the same, but still very shocking and insulting happen to me once (but not to my face) & I have forever told anyone that I meet that want to buy needlepoint stuff, not to go to that place because of it!
I'm in Texas and they have a "Confederate Heros' Day on Jan 19th. That particular year, the 19th also landed on Martin Luther King Jr.'s holiday. These ladies in the back of the store were talking about how insulting it was that their holiday landed on that n*****r's holiday & how they were going down later to see the "Grand High Wizard" downtown (that's a KKK rank.) Now, I'm white, but I'd rather celebrate MLK's day than the Conferate Heros' Day any year (and they took away Columbus Day!!!) So I think you can understand why I quietly left & have advised noone ever to return. No, I don't know if the place is still in business.

regardless of wether or not you have the money when you walk into a shop there is no need to have to buy something. People window shop and browse all the time. he was in the wrong for trying to "push" you into a purchase. Also he shouldnt have made that unpleasent remark regardless of what it was. The sole purpose for shops are to "shop " around. check out competive rates. see what has what you are looking for at the right price.

That is terrible!! I go into stores all the time and don't buy things, because they don't have what I want, or I just wanted to look, just as you did, so you will know howm uch money you need for a certain item. The store keeper was definitely in the wrong!! Don't feel bad!
