Do you find yourself revealing information that's TOO personal on MyLot ?

I often am tempted by the sharing atmosphere ,sometimes I catch myself at the last minute before divulging very private information that is useful to nobody and most certainly may harm me (like ideas about certain controversies or policies or family matters etc ) Do you get carried away sometimes and "say too much" ?

I don't consider giving your opinion about certain contreversies or policies as "saying too much". As for personal matters, I only say what is important (if there's any) in a discussion. Nothing too personal. I don't even respond to discussions which I consider too personal.

Hello ,cerium . I meant by controversial my own interpretations of Islam ,for example . That should concern only me ,but in our countries that is not the case .Any non-traditional opinion can be easily twisted to appear subversive ,and that is a dangerous thing to let people know about you . This is in responce to how you do not consider revealing some opinions "saying too much" .Why dont you ever answer any topics with personal implications ? Isnt that what is fun about internet chatting and forums ? The frankness and openness provided by anonymity ?

I know exactly what you mean. However, I think the internet is a safer place to say your opinions freely. As for the interpretations of Islam, non-traditionalists had their voices heard recently in many incidents. I don't consider my interpretations as "my own" as they are common with many other people. It' nothing new invented but relying more on God's words than on traditional scholar's opinions. It was even a debated since the days of Averros (Ibn RushD) and Al Ghazaly. As for the personal subjects, I only don't discuss what I consider too personal. I don't like chatting that much. I just like having a discussion with a group of people on certain subjects. It's really useful to listen to different opinions.

I have found myself actually typing personal stuff when responding to discussions that really get me going. I have to sometimes go back and retype my thoughts before submitting. I completely understand what you are saying about this. It is just so easy to get carried away in some of the discussions. I just try to pay extra close attentions to what I am saying.

Hello ,serenae ! thank you for replying ! One does frequently get carried away ,that's one more reason why MyLot should include an 'edit post' feature !

There have been times when I look back at an answer I may have given and realize how much of myself I have exposed. My logic though is if someone wants to use this against me,then that is fine.Since I have no intent on running for public office or doing any illegal things,I am not worried should someone find something I typed interesting".

Excellent reply . Nothing to hide , nothing to be afrad of ! But there are other , more subtle ways (other than incrimination) revealed information can come back to haunt you ,like information about friends or family . In some of the posts written here , real life events are sometimes told where other people's actions are mentioned as well as opinions of different people .Do you think it's better to avoid discussions based on personal experience alltogether ?
