Would crime diminish or increase if citizens carried guns on their person?

I definitely think crime would diminish, especially random muggings or robberies. I think criminals would be hesitant to prey upon anybody in which they didn't know if they were "packing" or not. What do you think?

Crime would fall dramaticaly and pretty much overnight.And yes,criminals would be hesitant to commit criminal acts once the playing field had been leveled.I'd like to see it happen,but of course it never will.
