Be careful of what people leave in your comment section...

Over the past few days, I have started to get warning popups when I visit the profiles of many of my friends. What do all those friends have in common? They are friends with a person that is leaving his "shout box" in their comment section. I don't see any reason for doing this. It's not a valid comment, he is only promoting himself. If he has left this in your comment section, please be advised that it is giving some people warnings when they visit your page---that could be a bad thing. If he were my friend and left me such a comment, I would immediately delete it by clicking on the little trashcan icon within the comment section.

I have been pretty lucky with comments. But I did have one comment that was linked to music and scared the crap out of me when I forgot to turn my speaker volume down. I had to delete that comment. I hope people don't take offense if I delete those type of comments. :)

Maybe you should point out the culprit to the myLot admins. I personally don't understand why people do things like that. Just to annoy the others? He/she may lose a few friends, then...

I actually sat here trying to figure out the best course of action. I don't think he's actually breaking any of the mylot rules, so I didn't report him.

Hmm... Blueskies, since you are my friend, was I one of those people whose profile you visited? Cos I DID get a comment from one of the people on my friend list which the comment was NONE OTHER than a shoutbox, not a greeting to me of any sort. I deleted it right after seeing it on my profile page though, cos I didn't like the way it distorted my page. And I actually didn't realy favor that person much anyway, cos his postings seemed to be pretty stuck up to me.

Then I suppose it's up to the friends to warn him. He may stop doing that when he sees his friends list dwindling.

You should not only delete it. But report it to my lot if it happens to you. I am sorry someone has the desire to do something along that line.

I am not familiar with the term "shout box" but I assume it is a promotional link. I have noticed this in some people's comment boxes, but have not run into a warning. I would possibly go one step further and delete him as a friend, because self promotion is not very friendly. He could pm you if he wanted you to see what he is promoting. He is on your friend list.

There are too many people on here that are NOT using mylot as a community for discussion, but using it as a way to get referrals or try to promote something. It's very transparent. I almost wish you could tag certain discussions so that you wuld never see them again. BUt thanks for that piece of advice. I had no idea it was getting that bad.

Wow - thanks for the warning. Not only did I not realize there were comments on my profile, I didn't realize people could potentially add code like that.

I'm sorry but I'm a little bit slow with these things, what is a shout box? I don't think anyone has put anything bad on my page, I have a few pictures and some music my friends have put on. Will I know if someone sends me something like this? Than kyou for letting me know this is happening I will keep an eye on my friends comments.

Hi Rainbow. If someone adds it to your comment section, you will see it as a grey box with scrolling text inside. It's hard to miss :)

I am sorry my friend for sounding slow on this topic but please can you tell me what "shout box" means? Sorry tos ound stupid but what does it mean? Have I got a shout box on my profile and I have I been doing it unaware? If I know about it then I can look out for it the future, so thanks for the warning and for being patient in explaining what a shout box is!

No shoutbox on your page. The person that is leaving the shoutbox commented on the first page of this discussion. If you go to his profile, you will see his shoutbox on the left of the screen. It's harmless on his profile, but I'm not sure why he has left it on the profiles of others.

luckily i dont i havent recieve any shout box from friends. thanks for that warning. i have my own shout box but i only put it in my own profile and not to others comment box and i dont inted to. i think some users put it just to have an easy and fast acces to thre friends shoutbox. but i agree with you, if that will only cause problem for others to visit your profile then it just be deleted. instead roaming your profile they will just go to other profile.

Thanks so much for warning us about this! I didn't realize that this was happening, since I do visit my profile page daily but I have Firefox installed with the noscript extension working, which means that I don't usually get any popups, and I hadn't noticed if someone has left me that particular comment. A friend just told me that someone has left one, so I'll have to go into my profile and delete it. I don't want to cause everyone to wish to avoid my profile page because of getting frustrating popups. I do definitely recommend getting the Firefox browser and the noscript extension to make your browsing experience after, anyway, though. I havent had a single popup since installing it, unless I am using a different browser for some reason.

Blueskies one of my Friends just asked for help on this how to turn it of. I don't understand why this Person is doing this and he can't be a Friend if he/she goes doing things like that. I would actually delete him from my Friends List if I where you.

Hi Gabs. I really don't think he had bad intentions, he stated he thought it would be a fun way to keep in touch with his friends. Unfortunately, it seems it may not be working out that way. I let him know that people are having trouble deleting the box. He asked me for the link, so he's aware of the problem now. Hopefully, either he or mylot can find a way to delete it from the profiles.

I don't think it's a virus, the popup that I'm getting is a warning saying that there is a problem with the security certificate. This is because of the banner he includes with the shoutbox. That banner is hosted on a website that is secure and must not have an updated security certificate. That's about the extent of my knowledge on such things.
