So our phone number is listed in the local Yellow Pages as being a car dealership and one can only imagine the amount of phone calls I get a day for the dealership or to talk about insurance, it is so annoying, they call repeatedly, even when I tell them the number is incorrect. How would you handle the situation. I have tried to not answer the phone but it only goes to voice mail and most leave messages on it, I feel I am helping them telling them they are not calling the right number but it is almost like a full time job directing people not to call us.

My problem is that my family members are always calling on phone numbers I don't know or my boyfriend calls and the number is different cause he works for such a large company, so I am doomed. The day I said I would not answer the phone unless I knew the number both my boyfriend and daughter said to me "why are you not answering the phone today" I give up~!

This would be very annoying. As much trouble as it would be I actually think I would get my number changed because that phone book is going to be around for years and you will continue to get calls.

We would, but we have children and for them to remember the phone number is a big deal, thanks for sharing

What...what kind of kids can't remember a phone number..
or program it into a cell phone....??If they can't handle this small task, I shudder to think about the horrors of them facing it out there in the big world. And from reading your other posts, I know these kids are not toddlers or infants, but young adults or teenagers....all the more reason to make them toe the line....sounds like the tail is wagging the dog. And good luck with the puppies..!

I agree with byfaithonly, you should get the phone number changed. I would have who ever made the mistake of putting the number listed as a car dealership to pay for the cost of a new number. When I get a wrong number, I usually say I am sorry that person does not live here, you must have the wrong number. I recommend try changing the phone number. This is not a usual wrong number situation.

I had someone keep doing this like 3 times and I TOLD them it was NOT the right number. They still kept calling its like GET A CLUE!
I hate it especially if its my CELL PHONE and its TAKING MINUTES to answer it since I get caller ID. I am like do I know you? NO!
The worst yet was today. A fax machine called our phone 5x this morning and left 5 fax messages "beeps" that is. Then came later on I found it said we had "10 missed calls" and most were the stupid person faxing nothing. GET A CLUE! Tonight around 10pm here came a phone ring. Oh goodie. Guess what? I answer FAX MACHINE!
I used to fax, I KNEW it was NOT a fax when someone answered OR I got a machine. DUH. Faxes DONT sound like that at all! *sigh*
makes a girl mad I tell ya!

haha! i wonder why most wrong number calls pop up when we are busy? sometimes, we stop what we are doing just to answer the phone thinking that it might be important. only to answer that person who dialled the number wrongly and got to you. gosh. that's too annoying.

your number being listed wrongly in the yellow pages? that's really a job for you to do. telling people that they called the wrong number and that sometimes, it needs explaining, too. i hope it will be erased from the yellow pages next year for you to atleast have a break from being in the "front desk" of that car company. lol.
for me, it's okey if i get calls from people who dialled my number wrongly. i just say that they called the wrong person. what irritates me is when i get calls and that they insist that it's my number they are calling and that they are thinking that i am lying to them. it's hard to explain one's side to people who won't believe.

I seldom have had this problem, except during my second pregnancy, when a drunk would call me when the bars closed, except he was consistently misdialing, ending his call with a one instead of a 2. My girlfriend, on the other hand, has a number that is similar to several things, as well as a last name that is easily mistaken. When she was a stay at home mom she had a listing posted on her white board of the correct numbers for all of the wrong numbers she consistently got. I have never seen anyone else quite so helpful. She is a good friend to have.

Sounds like a very good friend to have. I am not that nice I am afraid, I do tell them that we are not a dealership and they need to check with information but I don't believe I would go to the point of giving them the correct number, just enough to contend with all the phone calls. Thank you for sharing.

We are not the first owners of our landline telephone's number. The previous owners had their line cut due to nonpayment of their telephone bills. Some of the previous owners' acquaintances who did not know that they had their line cut sometimes call our number. When I am in a good mood, in a nice way, I tell the one on the other end of the line that I do not know who they are looking for. But if I am in a sour mood, I give curt replies then put the receiver down. Bad huh?

No, not bad, sometimes when the people call repeatedly after telling them that the number is not correct in the phone book and they need to call information I do get nasty, I mean I am nice until I have to repeat myself

That really sucks, i hate phone issues anyway, like when you get telemarketers, or when people call you 5 times a day for the same stupid thing and you told them no your not interested, or when someone calls for someone else, or when you call someone and they never answer there phone, my mother in law is famous for that she is home but does not answer the phone, i feel for you girl!!

This perticular intruption can be taken as an exercise of keeping ourself cool.
Make a practice of such nuisance in all the places,
not only on phone but even at work place and in your home too.
Ever person need not be a disciplined.
You have to consider a variety of people with varity
of bad habits.
If you go panic with those people, it would be you only who will be sufering life long.
So just ignore and keep yourself always cool.
This would give you a peace of mind as well as an energy to work in your own pace & fashion.
Handle every idiot in a gentle manner, you look good.

I just hate that as well. I could understand the first time they called, I mean everyone could make a mistake. But to inform them and still they keep on calling and forcing the same thing on you that this is the number they have is just plain annoying. I suggest you change your number, get a caller id phone, and if you still get these kind of callers then just ignore them when they call the second time around.

I've had that before with a Pizza place. Our Phone Number was almost the same with the last two digits swapped over.
We got so many calls and we'd pick the phone up and hear people start to place an order for pizza. The absolute worst was when Friday and Saturday night rolled around. The number of people that called drunk for a pizza was crazy! And because they were drunk it usually took thrre or four attempts to tell them that they had the wrong number. It got so bad that we ended up unplugging the phone over the weekend and told our family they could reach us on my cell phone.
We eventually got our phone number changed and the silence on the weekends was just eerie lol. It took some getting used to, but it was great not having to answer the phone or unplug it all the time.

there's a function in the phone to block unwanted call not from the list. most of the new phone can find this function. you can try to check out in your phone.
i used to set it up to block any incoming call from any unknown call not from my list(contact list)

Yes our number is listed in the local white pages, oh dear you must get a lot of people phoning you due to your car dealership, oh dear some people ....they are so daft when they repeatedly phone the wrong number. It was annoying for me when we had a phone number which was nearly the same as a big store here and people used to phone all the time they never looked in the phone book, so I can understand your problem and how annoying it is.

I don't like them either, but I try to be nice. I know I have dialed incorrectly, and have had people snap at me. Others are nice about it, so I try to treat them the way I want to be treated.

Whe I am at home and th phone rings I check the number, if it is a number that I know I wqill answer but if it is someone that I don't recognize I will let them use the voice mail. Not too many people will use the voice mail and I think that if it is important then they will leave a message. After all why should I argue with someone that I don't know?

Why the heck is your number listed as a car dealership anyway?? That's terrible...I have my answering machine on all the time...since I don't have caller ID it's a great way to screen calls...before that, I used to get a lot of calls from people wanting to talk to someone about the WIC program..obviously my phone number must be similar..and many would rattle on in another language instead of English. But I think I solved the problem and the problem of having too many messages on my machine as well...instead having a message on my machine solely in English, I have it in French too...I kid you not! That throws people off who might otherwise think they are calling say WIC
My message on my machine is: "Bonjour, comment allez-vous..Hi, there I cannot come to the phone right now, please leave your name and phone number and I shall get back to you as soon as possible..Merci beaucoup. Au revoir"
My friend told me a hysterical one to leave as a message..."Hi, there. I'm trying to avoid talking to someone...please leave your name and number...If you don't hear from me...It's you."
Good one huh?
