I play golf. I used to be on the national team, and I just thought about this typically discussion i have with my friends over and over. they will not sau golf is a sport, " You just walk around and hit a ball".... that might be the case for a one time a month player, but I always say, If you are serious and concider yourself a top national athlete, or just a really good player, then it definately is a SPORT.
Few sport require so much practice and rutine excersises as golf. You practise on a regular 5-6 hours a day, in the winter you train condition and physique. And in the summer you practice tehnique and playing. And it also requires a really patient and smart head. It gives a psychologically beating when you play tournaments, two seconds of unconcentrating and you,re done. You have to be focused beyond belief.
So you actually need-
1. Good condition- you walk for 4-5 hours in a round, so it,s a long walk. up and downs.
2. Good physique. You need to be strong to hit the ball hard and to have balanced movements.
3. A good head. You MUST remain cool on heated situations, otherwise you are done.
4. Perfect tehnique- Requires chasing the perfect for hours.
And also the game of golf, is not just hitting a ball. It is about-
1. Hitting about 50 different shots with 14 clubs, to be able to make it turn right, left, high, low etc... There are so many shots. Most people doesn,y know this.
2 Working really hard off course to be good.
3. Perfection of your tehcnique. This is done almost to much. Minimum 2 hours a day.
4 Have a good balanced head, make right decisions over a span of 4 to 5 hours. You can NOt make an error!
So To me golf is a sport, but that is because I have been playing since I was 5, so I know everything about it, and how MUCH it requires to compete in a high level. And I know how much practice and training it requires, so I would classify golf as a sport for people who try to compete, at least nationally, and a hobby for the 9-5 guy who plays a round every saturday.
So to me golf is a sport! hehe, well I guess you got my point, but I get a bit irritated when people who don,t knoe anything about it, just categorized it a game of bingo... "It,s just a game, not a sport".... I try to convince them, but it is not easy.
This doesn,t really bug me that much, but I wish people wouldn,t judge and be so strong opinioned on areas where they lack information. Melf included, (but I really try not to)....
So please respond, and feel free to totally disagree or to agree. It,s up to you

i agree with you.
I think golf isn't just a hobby. Many people who deal with golf are just like any other sports men.
to be a golf playe you need to know the skills, you need good shape, and very good tehnique.
I my opinion golf concider a sport just like football, basketball etc...
I play basketball for almost all my life, and I can tell that golf is harder for me than basketball or any other "ball sports" that I've played.

at first it started as a hobby, later on it became a entertainment game for older people and with the entry of younger generations it became sport with big money.

Golf is a sport in which individual players or teams hit a ball into a hole using various clubs, and also is one of the few ball games that does not use a fixed standard playing area. It is defined in the Rules of Golf as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules."
Golf is said to have originated in the Netherlands (see History below), but has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Golf, in essentially the form we know today, has been played on Scotland's Musselburgh Links (today's oldest golf course world-wide) since 1672, while earlier versions of the game had been played in the British Isles and the low-countries of Northern Europe for several centuries before that. Although often viewed as an upperclass pastime, golf is an increasingly popular sport across all sections of society
