Usually I greet with a handshake, if I don't know them or barely know them. If they are a people person like me or if I know them, I hug them too. If they are really close to me, I hug and kiss them. The only one that gets lots of kisses is my hubby.

a handshake is always nice ..
but ive started becoming pretty rude .. less handshakes and less chat ..
this is because .. i see many people ive known all my life come home from whichever country theyve graduated from .. and start the whole cheek-pecking crap ..
the "hi! *muah* *muah*" .. and sometimes the *muah* can go on ..
greeting another person has turned into a fake thing .. its really lame ..

It depends on the person and the situation.
I come from a big, affectionate family and we grew up greeting each other with hugs and kisses on the cheek, so that's how I still greet my family and closest friend. Friends may get hugs and kisses on the cheek, just hugs, handshakes or a just a warm verbal hello, depending on the closeness of the friendship and how that person responds to physical affection.
I usually greet strangers at work with just a verbal hello, eye contact and a smile - maybe a handshake if I am being introduced to them by a colleague or if they are coming to my work to meet with me.
This just reminded me - a few years ago I was giving a man who was interviewing to become my new boss a tour of our office and introducing him to our staff. He offered his hand for a handshake to one of my co-workers and she stuck her hand behind her back and said "oh no, no way, I don't shake hands. That's how you get germs." I was really embarrassed at the time!
