The dirtiest word in the English language (British!)

I'm in a bad mood. I know that this site has had its downs and at times i have considered quitting but this tops it all. I just found out that who'm i thought was a quality and well respected member of this site has been spreading the B word around. Might i remind you that this is by far the most insulting word imaginable. We have a right to an identity you know. IM ENGLISH AND PROUD!!! you use that word around me and you might as well spit in my face, lock me up in chains and leave me to rot forever! i am of course talking about that word........... British! P.S. That was fun, i wish i truly believed all that stuff, but my question is aimed at mainly the Scottish but all brits really, why are you so adamant of being Scottish, English, Welsh, Irish. Should we not be equally as proud of being British? P.P.S. Thankyou to cremechese for the inspiration for this question (Cremechese, 2007, http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/797366.aspx) I hope i have referenced correctly

Everyone should be proud of their heritage. When one forgets where they came from, they lose their roots. When roots are gone, it is just a matter of time before existance is gone. Look at a plant... how long can it survive without roots? People are no different. You have to have ties to a place. You have to be firmly grounded somewhere. i am an American but i am a Southerner... it distinguishes me from my "yankee" counterparts... my roots.

I wholly agree that you should be proud of where your from but the thing is that the Scottish on the whole hate being called British, surely they should be proud of both, their Scottish heritage and the modern Britain. I am very proud of Being English but during sporting events i will also support Wales, Scotland and Ireland. But its not the same the other way around. I live in Wales at the moment and the other week i was in the pub watching England Vs Italy in the Rugby and every Welshman in the pub was cheering for the Italians, but they have no connection to the Italians and they've been in a Union with the English for over 400 years so surely they should support England.

ah well history does not die for some people. here in the states it's the civil war that will never die.. even though it officially ended in 1865. There are still conflicts over the confederate flag, it is still blamed for a lot of the racial issues that are present in today's society. If we forget the mistakes of the past we are destined to repeat them. But, on the flip side, old grudges need to be forgiven and moved past or we are still stuck in yesterday's problems.

I think this is just a bunch of rubbish and pride can cause problems as well

I'm English and proud to say I'm British too. It seems that the rest of Britain doesn't feel comfortable being British any more - they are splitting off from the rest of Britain and trying to govern themselves separately. Wales is now an officially bilingual country even though no-one outside of Wales can speak the language (or even many people in Wales). Cornwall is trying to resurrect their language now, how long before Scotland turns its back on English? Being part of Great Britain gave our little countries strength - dividing them back into the small countries again can't be a good thing in my opinion.
