I heard today that members of parliament here in Canada are trying to pass a law that would make the punishment harsher for animal cruelty here. It's about damn time!! It's a proven fact that often times animal cruelty is a precursor to more serious crimes. Maybe if these sickos were given a few years in jail, and a ten thousand dollar fine, they wouldn't do it again.

This all started after a case where two teenage boys bound one of the boys own dogs feet with duct tape, and dragged it behind a truck for over a kilometre. You can only imagine what this did to the dog. Obviously the dog had to be euthanized. Their court case is at the end of May.

That is one great news! The laws should be protecting those who are helpless and powerless to protect themselves. A lot of sick people who resort to these abuses just to boost their egos should be prosecuted and punished.
You are right about this precursor thing. It would be too late if we punish this sickos when they're violence and abuse already escalated to targeting people.

To me, beating on an animal is just as bad as beating on a humanbeing. Animals are never given the respect that they should be given just because they can't defend themselves. I've always thought that if a person murders an animal, they should be punished as if the victim had been a humanbeing. I am also from Canada and hadn't heard about them trying to make tougher animal cruelty laws, this has made my day!! It's about time..

I like the idea but wonder how it will work. There is no age limit or class for people who abuse animals. Will putting them in jail help?Or by making it more expensive?I would hope that instead of hiding these cases on page 17 of the newspaper that these people receive the "recognition" they deserve.Plus community hours would be a good idea(alot of them). If the idea of jail is still to rehabilitate, then extending the jail time will be of little use.If the idea is to punish, then extra jail time would be a good punishment.Do we have the money and space to house these new prisoners??
I agree we as Canadians have to do something about cruelty to animals, but this idea may need some tinkering with to become effective.

Good! That's the best news I've heard all day. There is NO EXCUSE for animal cruelty. People who can't understand or don't care that animals feel pain and fear are not people fit to live in civilized society.
