I have decided to buy a yacht, but can't make up my mind, should I go for a Mono hall or Catamaran

This is pretty much a matter of personal choice and the sort of sailing that you want to do (racing or cruising) and where you want to do it. Cats are good if you have a lot of shoal water which a cats shallow draft can use, cats have more deck space for sunbathing and so on and are generally faster than a mono, They will also stay more or less level regardless of how fast they are sailing so you can put your drink down without fear of it ending up in the bilges as soon as you let it go :)As you might guess, most of my sailing has been done on catamarans. I'd suggest that to do some sailing on both types, either charter or sailing on friends boats. That way, you'll get a feel for both types in the only way that matters - actual sailing.

thanks 4 the response I hear wat you say but my question was not put correctly and should have had more detail. I did own a cat a few years ago it was a Dean 365 and have done most of my sailing on cats with very little on mono hulls. I just found that in ruff weather you get a lot of pounding in the center. and also found it hard to slow the boat down with winds 35knts+. I was wondering if someone had experience of both types of boats and how they compare.

Your choice is almost all about where you want to sail! I am having the same problem with my choice right now. I'm planning a new boat by this years end and been tossing them both around. Though most of my sailing has been on a mono hull,I have done alot on multi hull also. My best friend has been pointing out to me that when its time to do the bottom cleaning and paint that on multi hulls, you have multi hulls to do. I've been thinking alot about that. Now I'm 50 and ready to get some sailing done I also do my own upkeep.I like the spread out room of the multi hull but the weather will beat your brains out. Its a choice that will take a lot of thought. I've been in storms that make you wish you never had seen the ocean, and the mono hull is my choice for a storm all hands down.Well good luck and prey to mother ocean for safe passage.God Bless

Hi! I have never sailed anywhere but the adriatic coast (Croatia). Cats are very rare here and I have never been sailing on them... have checked them at boat-shows. So, with the lack of experience I can only point out one thing: finding a mooring place or even a place to anchor in a harbour during the high season can be very problematic even on a small mono.
Please let us know about your decission!

What ever you do, don't buy a Catamaran, they are intrinsically unstable.
A mono-hull can relieve wind pressure by heeling and will come back upright. A Cat can completely capsize.
Before you buy a boat, get some experience on other people's boats - there is always someone looking for crew.
