Good mothering plays a key role in the way a child turns out one of which is choosing a career path to follow.
To begin with a child's intelligence correlates better with the IQ of the mother than that of the father. This is due to both genetical and non genetical factors. Also mother-child bonding tends to be stronger than father-child bonding (I must say this depends on your culture)and thus a child is more likely to turn to and rely more on the judgement of the mother regarding his or her suitability and ability to pursue a career path rather than that of the father when taking such decisions as chosing a career. So in general we all end up being in careers that our mothers like or do not have major objections to.

I wouldn't go into discussing financial returns with my kid regarding specific lines of work. I would rather enlighten him on:
1)choosing a career that is in line with his skills/talents/interests
2)the non-monetary returns of certain careers
3) job prospects/advancement prospects for various lines of work

"Good" mother is always subjective ;) what one kid wants/needs from his or her mom won't be the same across the board.
I see my role as mother, to support the career choice of my children rather than to shape it. I may help them identify interests and strengths, but I leave the finer details up to them to pick through and decide on their own.
