Meaning of phrases

I am new to myLot and read many discussions. I hve a problem understanding some phrases, example, what is LOL. I have seen it in a few discussions but don't understand.

If it helps, anytime you see BTW, it means by the way. When I first started using the internet, I didn't know what : ) was. Now, I know it was a smile. I felt so silly!

it happens my friend that you don't know about abbreviations used in chats and by bloggers. lol means laugh out loud. i didn't know initially. my friend once said it means love you lots! like AFK means away from keyboard, OMG means oh! my god , BTW means by the way, ppl means people, ty means thank you and so on.
