Homosexuality: Why make the choice?

This is an honest question I've pondered about for a long time now. Being an observant person, at least to personal belief, I tend to take notice of the why's and how's first compared to the who's and what's. Though the topic may seem taboo, but please, humor me.
I had a conversation before with my filmmaking mentor, he's homosexual, yet that doesn't mean much to me. I respect him nonetheless. Anyway, I just broke up with my girlfriend then and instead of talking about future projects, I ended up talking to my mentor about personal life. After narrating my sad, pathetic story, I told him, "Ah men were never meant to understand women and vice versa." He laughed and answered, "that's why I'm gay."Now, that got me thinking. Could it really be one of the reasons why homosexuals chose to be such? That need to be understood? It's kinda ironic since having same gender preferrences tend to be misunderstood by society, yet could it be that these people find peace this way? Please, I may be a straight guy talking about homosexuality, but this thread is not meant to bash on or insult anyone. I'd appreciate it if there would be no hostility flying around.=) More knowledge usually results to deeper understanding, so let's aim for that.

Hello jinonicolas........
A persons sexuality is not a choice....No one ever wakes up one day and says, today I will be heterosexual, homosexual or lesbian.
We are born who we are.
