I think the wedding cake, while not entirely necessary, is a great addition to a wedding. We will have ours set up on the dance floor through dinner, so everyone can see it. It is probably the one time in your life you'll ever have such a nice cake :) The cutting part of it is just a minor tradition in most cultures, but my cousins are arabic and they go all out! They dance, cut it with a sword, and really make it a huge thing. That was pretty interesting.
I agree that a lot of people will remember if your cake is unique, and pretty. I hope mine is memorable!

As a part of a wedding tradition, yes. It adds to the celebration. As a status symbol that a celebration is happening. Cake is usually present in all kinds of celebration. Not just as part of the menu or the decoration. But as a symbol that represents happiness.

The Wedding Cake was originally lots of little wheat cakes that were broken over the Bride's head to bring good luck and fertility. Every guest then eats a crumb to ensure good luck. Sleeping with a piece under her pillow is said to make a single woman dream of her future husband.
Cutting the wedding cake is now part of the ritual celebrations at the reception. The couple make the first cut together to symbolise their shared future.
According to one long-forgotten tradition, the bottom layer of a wedding cake represents the couple as a family, and the top layer represents them as a couple. Each layer in between represents a child you hope to have. (this tradition is obsolete and now you just add layers to cover the number of guests that you have). The origin of the tiered wedding cake also lies in Anglo-Saxon times. Guests would bring small cakes to the wedding and stack them on top of each other. Later, a clever French baker created a cake in the shape of the small cakes and covered it in frosting. It is now known as the tiered cake.
The cake cutting and the wedding kiss during feeding of the wedding cake is a fun tradition. Everyone likes to see how pretty the cake is that you choose and everyone one wants to see the cake smashed into someones face. It is just fun and brings laughter & joy to the end of a momentous occassion that adds stress to the brides life.

I think it is nice to have a wedding cake that is attracive and it does have a nice place at the reception but I dont think that it holds that big a place, Though everyone likes to take cake home with them and it is lovely to see the bride and groom cut the cake, i prefer the first dance, I have been to a few weddings now where the party favours are of more interest and are discussed more than the wedding
