Is there any HOME MADE remedy for dry cough???

When I was little my mother used to mix butter, sugar and honey in a little dish and we would eat it off a spoon, a bit yukky but it seems to help. When my children were little the asian guy who had the corner shop told me that in his country they mix honey with ground ginger for coughs and I've made that as well and it does seem to work. I think there must be something in honey as it is in a lot of bought rememdies as well.
