Photography Contest Is this a Scam?

Has anyone ever submitted a picture to picture.com? They are sponsoring a photo contest. Enter the International Open Amateur Photography Contest for your chance to win the Grand Prize of $10,000.00! I get all kinds of photography emails because I was trying to help my daughter find photography work. It doesn't look like they charge an entry fee...unless that happens after you upload a photo? I don't want to waste my time if its a scam!

I sent photos into them twice. ONe was a serious photo and the second just to see if they would tell me all the same stuff they did the first time, which they did. What they do is then tell you that your photo has been selected to be published and then try to sell a copy of the book (for like $60) and if you want your bio in the book as well you will need to pay an "insertion fee" of $20 or so. Later, regardless if you bought the book, etc, they will tell you that you are a "finalist" and should come to their convention, costing some exhorbinant amount of money, and while your there you will get a trophy of your own (for $90). I didn't bite on any of this stuff, and I have no idea if any "grand prize" is really awarded if you do go to the conference, but it is likely since they would have all those witnesses, though you would have to invest quite a bit to get it. Basically, it is not a scam, so much as a publishing company that makes money feeding on the egos of amature photographers. There is a Poetry.com that does the same thing for writers, too. But, uploading your photo will not cost you anything, nor does it commit you to buying anything.

Thamks so much for the information. I had an feeling there would be a catch. I had a similiar situation with the baby phot contest. My daughter's photo was selected but I would need to pay a fee for something...I can't really remember what it was for. I just stopped reading after I saw that wanted MONEY to get promoted to the next level.

Yeah, it is amazing how great they think everyone's photo is when they think you may send them money, isn't it? :-) At least you had the sense to step back and look at the situation objectivily and not get caught up in the hype.

In today's time it's always wise to read the fine print or the terms of service. Thanks

Yep, they're a scam. They tell you that your photo has been selected, but if you want to see it in print, you have to pay for the book it's in. I doubt they even put in the photos of the people that don't buy the book. There's one just like it for poetry. I did that one when I was young and niave. Actually my parents paid for the book just to see my name in print. Then I bought the next two myself. Not only do they do that, they ocassionally sent me other mail to buy my poem on a coffee mug, an old-fashioned scroll, etc. I just it's smart on their end, but not for us. I'd like to find a library or something to see if they print them in ones where you don't buy the book. I think the two companies are related since it's the same thing with the both of them. It's was hard for me because I was young and naive and fell for it - UGH! There's a name for it actually. It's called vanity publishing, because you're so vain to have to see your name in print that you will pay for it. How about that, huh?

Yep, lol vanity sounds about right...followed closely by gullible. Have you visited Writers digest.com? They have a lot of cool stuff and information for writers. I'm on their email list. I'm not a writer or a poet but sometimes I like to visit the site and read other peoples stories.

I subscribe, but never seem to have the chance to read it. I just keep them in binders. Well, I do use their writer's prompts - and maybe one day I'll use them. My life has been so crazy lately, I just haven't had the time!

I never heard about this site before today but i'll say u that keep on adding images. There is nothing bad in taking risk if its free. I accept that it hurts us when we waste our time on anywhere and do n't get any reward but we have to do so. We seek from our mistakes. If urs heart and urs daughter is interested in working there then keep on adding images there otherwise, it'll b better to work on mylot where u get money with gurantee.

I know there must be legitimate places to submit your work. She's not interested in submitting her photographs for a few pennies. I can't say that I blame her.

I was more interested in having my daughter submit one of her photos. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a waste of her time and it looks like it is.

I also entered this once, now I have to contend with the constant emails from them. They probably didn't even look at my picture. Oh! well live and learn it is not the first time I have been sucked in and it probably won't be the last.

The internet has become a vast amount of scams. It's become a real headache trying to find the legimate companies. I am sure there must be real photography contests out there somewhere.

You have to be really careful with all these types of response contests. Best way to deal; with these situations are to assume you will be scammed and do not go for the extras.

My thoughts exactly! Other than the lotto you should have to pay any kinds of fees.
