How realistic do you think the CSI shows are

I mean the crime scenes, the way the murders were done and how they investigated it, the forensics part of it. How close to the real thing do you think they get? Or are they even close? Do you think all those medical examinations, thumbprint matching and all those 'technical stuff' they use to get to the killer is what the real forensics people do? Those hi-tech gadgetry, do you think they're for real or is it just touched up by cinematics? Do they just over exaggerate those events/procedures?
I mean, here in our country, I don't think that our local law inforcement is capable even of half of what the CSi series shows. I'm just curious if those things are really done and is possible in the US or other foreign countries, then it must only mean that our country is way way behind when it comes to solving crime.
So can you give me your input?

No way. They solve murders completely randomly. Its like the main guys, Grissom, Horatio, and Gary Sinese always have the answers at the end of the episode. Some vague clue will come up and they'll know exactly what it means and have the whole thing solves out just because of one little thing.
And they abuse technology too, they use imaginary techniques with computers like blowing up pictures without losing quality.

They do have the equipment to do such things as they show in there. They do speed up how long it takes for results on them, mostly due to the limitations of the shows. Yes they want to solve the cases, it's why we watch it after all so they will find out the answers from the infromation. No real life isn't that easy like they show in there but then it's not real life. Real forensics do have all the technical stuff it's just a matter of having all the things to run through it. That's were it can get problematic. Also they don't just use it on every little thing, those things cost money so they do wait till they have to before they do.

I believe that most of the equipment we see them use is real, but it is the stuff you would find in only the most advanced and well funded departments. And I'm sure they stretch the percisness of the results, like how well they can clean up video from a crappy gas station camera enough to see a clear reflection in a car window or something; that's probably not very likely.
I think the main thing they do is compress time and combine jobs, they can run tests and do interviews and track information in hours instead of the weeks it would really take. And they have the CSIs doing things like interviews and clearing crime scenes that they would never do in real life, it would be someone else's job.
Mostly, people need to remember that it is a show for enertainment, not a documentry. If some one wants factual re-enactments, they sould watch Forensic Files on the Discovery channel instead (which is actually also quite good, it also happens to be true stories).

Yes, I guess you're right, sometimes it just seems so believable don't yah think?
But I guess forensic science did come a long way to help in solving crimes.
In light of this discussion I do hope that people realize that it is actually just a show and it's reality. As what one of the commenters pointed out, people sometimes expect that it is what is happening in real life so in turn they expect much much more from the real forensics experts who actually have to deal with the reality of time and clarity of evidence.

Think about it, they've only got ONE HOUR to solve a crime. It's entertainment. I'm sure forensic processes take longer based on what the characters clothings are in each scene; they're different when they get the results from a sample they submitted 2 and a half minutes ago. I still find it fascinating though; the forensic science is great but the show actually made me want to be a medical examiner.

yes, you're right they only got an hour to finish the show and one hour to solve the crime. And of course we know that they speed up the process so it's not that they solve it so fast, it's that they are able to solve it thru their processes. Thumbprint matching, hair/blood samples, dna, and all those stuff. They all seem so complicated to me. I was asking if it's possible that those processes they were doing really is done in the forensics lab or is it all just for show. Those hi tech equipment they use, I mean.

The forensics as portrayed in CSI is completely unrealistic. They somehow manage to get blood tests back within hours, DNA results while they wait. In the real world, these tests could take weeks or months to come back.
CSIs don't discuss cases the way they do on these shows either. CSI x would never tell CSI y what they were working on or what their results were. This would prejudice any work the second guy was doing and make it inadmissable in court.
Thirdly, CSIs don't bust down doors, chase bad guys or run interrogations.
Lawyers in both the US and Canada are finding it more and more difficult to get convictions because jury members assume that what they see on CSI is the real thing. So if a prosecutor doesn't present DNA evidence, they assume the prosecutor doesn't have a strong case and will tend to acquit. Jurors may doubt an eyewitness if there is no CSI-style evidence given to back the story up.

First off, it's a TV show, not even close to a reality show. It is to be expected that there would be an entertainment value to it, so there are a lot of exaggerations. Possible in terms of the use of high-tech gadgets; highly improbable in terms of how quick and sharp-witted the CSI investigators could get, and always getting the job accurately done-- and on the dot! If the show at least comes close to reality, then almost all the high-profile cases in the U.S. (or in Miami) could have been solved with such precision and speed.

I also think that the EXaggerate events but one thing i like the most is the technical stuffs. After seeing CSI a lot of people had gained the knowledge how the science is helping to solve the crime. Technologies they have been showing are cutting edge technology and they do exists in rich countries line usa, england etc.
