Book or Movie?

Do you prefer to read a book first and then watch the movie or do you watch a movie and then read the book? I think i prefer to read the book first and let my imagination define the characters within the story - although it is sometimes nice to have a face to go with a character. My favorite all time book is "And the Sea Will Tell" by Vincent Bugliosi - apparently, it was a made-for-tv movie that was released in the USA - poor me stuck here in Canada. My all time favorite book-to-movie is "The Green Mile". I loved the book (books really, as they were first released as six mini books). But the movie was fantastic. I have never seen a movie in which ALL of the characters so closely matched what I had envisioned as I read the book. A close second is the "Harry Potter" series - love the books and the movies. The worst I think was "The Bourne Identity" - they completely changed the ending - which is why I haven't read the second installment, "The Bourne Supremacy" or watched the movie of the same name. What do you think and what are your best and worst picks?

I sometimes like to watch the movie first and sometime I prefer to read first. I liked the Harry Potter movies but I read the books first and I prefer the books to the movie. They left so much out of the books in the movie adaptation. Like Hermoines thing for freeing the house elves was a great part of that book but they left it out in the movie. Just like they don't really deal with peeves very much either. I think the little things make the story as much as the main plot. But I do understand that they had to leave some out or we would have had a 4 or 5 hour movie.

They should have had Mel Gibson or Kevin Costner direct the movie - they don't seem to mind making LONG movies!!

I would rather read the book first and then watch the moive. Reading a book, I can imagine my own characters and my own backgrounds. Usually when I watch a movie after reading a book, I am very disappointed in it.

That's been my experience with most "based on the novel by..." movies. With the exceptions noted above, of course!

I love to read the book first and use my imagination. Plus it is then fun to see the changes when put onto a movie.

I think what I didn't like was all of the changes! Interesting that some people do like the changes.

I prefer to read the book first. I love books, and I just devour them, usually within a day or two if I'm not busy. There have been a lot of movies based on books that I've enjoyed, but I've learned that being "accurate" isn't always as important to me as being "entertaining". One example is "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The movie takes pieces from different books in the series, rather than just following the first book, and there are parts of the movie that just aren't in any of the books. However, it made me laugh harder than just about any movie I can remember, and so I think it's better this way. "The Green Mile" was a very good one for accuracy. =)
