Has anyone tried acupuncture for chronic pain?

I know most people who suffer chronic pain tend to try anything and everything to find relief.
I was wondering if anyone has had experience with acupuncture. In particular my chronic pain is back, due to deteriorating bones from cancer treatments. It effects my back, lumbar, neck, basically entire spine, hips and leg.
I have been seriously contemplating acupuncture but have wondered how to choose someone that's truly "good" and whether it honestly works.

Accupuncture works. Try to research accupuncture points online. You don't even need to use needles for it to work. You just apply alot of pressure on that point and you will feel relief. Here in the Philippines, there's a Chinese doctor who uses accupuncture. He has this little machine with a small metal wand. I tried it once. Before I did, I saw a lady with back pain go first. She felt the relief really fast. When I tried it, he made me wear this earpiece and he tried to guess where my problems were. I'm supposed to feel a little electric current on accupuncture points that I had problem with and he got them right on! His metal wand had a little electricity though and he did really push on my palm hard but it didn't hurt at all. He said other people complained, I thought it was pleasurable and my threshold of pain is pretty shallow. Anyway, it worked for me. Try it yourself. Find something thin but not sharp and use that to put pressure on the accupuncture point you need help on. Goodluck and tell me on here how it went. I do know you have to do it often, not just once.

I forgot to say that the accupuncture points he used were all found on the hand.

Well so far I've heard all good. I'm thinking it's worth a try. At this point it's about the only thing I haven't tried for the chronic pain.

I have had several patients with severe chronic back pain or peripheral neuropathy pain who have had good luck with acupuncture. There is one specialist in our area who treated our patients at a reduced rate because of their chronic illness. Although none of the patients had total pain relief from the acupuncture alone, we were able to significantly reduce their opiate (pain pill) use, which is a sign that it definitely helped. I had a few treatments myself for stress relief/relaxation and I fell asleep once during the treatment, I was so relaxed! I believe that it is a therapy worth considering for anyone suffering from chronic pain. Are you seeing a pain specialist? There are so many new treatments for chronic pain such as nerve blocks, nerve stimulators, and implanted catheters. Pain specialists are often neurologists, but they do a specialty fellowship in pain management. If you aren't seeing one, you might want to check that out, also.

I do have a pain specialist I see. I sort of dislike that whole idea because basically they seem to me to be basically someone who does nothing but prescribe heavy meds. Although I guess it depends on where you are with your pain and what's been tried.
I have a neurosurgeon also but they're 2 different people. I'm not really 100% sure what the background is of my pain specialist.

You know I have never tried this but I have heard good things about it. Some people swear by it. They actually did it to this lady on Oprah who had some chronic pain and after the
hour she said she really felt better. Now I'm not 100% sure I'd try it but then again I am fortunate not to be suffering with any chronic pain.

I have trigeminal neuralgia and looked into acupuncture, there was one guy in the area, that was an MD that also did acupuncture, which to me was perfect, the insurnce would cover it.
But after waiting 2 months to get an appt, he was removed from my plan. So I never got to try and see if it works.
My father was going for his back and said it helped but he stopped going because the guy was too far for him to drive. He did say it worked though.

Thanks. So far nothing bad has been said about it. It may be a real option for me to try.

my ex husband had acupuncture for a bad back and it certainly helped him. I'm not sure how you would find a good one, my husband had this one recommended to him by a friend. Maybe your doctor might be able to recommend someone.

Hi, Acupressure is usually given in a similar fashion to traditional massage. Points on the body are massaged using finger or thumb, and sometimes a blunt object, in a fairly rapid circular motion with a medium pressure. Massages last between 5 and 15 minutes. Some of the most common acupressure techniques are Rubbing, Kneading, Percussion and Vibration. Fingers, hands, elbows, knees and feet are often used to massage other parts of the body. Acupressure can be performed sitting, standing or lying down. Acupressure can help alleviate Pain, headaches, migraines, insomnia, depression, toothache, dizziness, menstrual pain, digestive disorders including diarrhea and constipation, nausea, morning sickness, motion sickness, stress and tiredness. In all cases, acupressure massage techniques are employed in collaboration with other appropriate medical care. Best of luck, have a nice time!! bye

I used acupuncture to treat chronic back pain and had excellent results. It helped loosen up the muscles that were seizing up around the injured area and causing decreased mobility and more pain. It also reduced inflammation in the area and inproved blood flow.

I have Temporalmandibular Joint disorder which is a jaw joint disorder i was on alot of meds which led to depression weight gain and alot of other not so nice things. I started working out in the gym and using heat and cold theraphy for the pain and relaxation exercises but that most likely woulld not work in your case. I did try the acupuncture for the pain and to tell you the truth it worked but only a little but again everyone is different what only worked a little on me my do alot more for you. If you can go for a nonmedicine route like the acupuncture because as i found out the hard way meds may work but the disadvantages like weight gain depression and addiction to pain killers are just not worth it. Trying to make your life as stress free as possible really helps too although that is not an easy task believe me i know. I have managed to tone stress down a bit but it is hard to.
