My boss treats some colleagues preferentially. He heaps them with praise and appreciates them regularly, while finding fault in everything I do. This has demotivated employees. I am made to feel incompetent and this is affecting my work. I can't approach my boss with my grievance. And don't want to quit the job. What do I do?

This is a difficult situation as it can be bullying. Does there seem to be any rational explanation for it? For example do others come in early and stay late and you come in late and leave early? If you have honestly looked at the situation to see if there is anything you could do to alter things and there isn't then you should talk to personnel or a union rep. They should be able to sort this out for you.
Would you be able to change departments if you are not happy?
Bullying in the workplace is unacceptable and it maybe that your boss is unaware of how their behavior is affecting you which is why you may have to involve a 3rd party. I hope you get this sorted out soon.

You're stronger , then your Boss. You do not need your Boss' affirmation in your life. Take Charge of your own emotions .Your Boss has a job to do much like your self. The only person you need to prove anything to is yourself. Once you discover this...you will find your happiness. I know Easier said then done.....

Oh dear...just be thankful you're not married to him. I suppose you can look at your job like a marriage relationship: it goes both ways.
You don't work, you don't get paid. He doesn't treat you well, you don't work well.
Why can't you approch your boss? If he doesn't know how you feel, he can't correct his mistakes.

Bosses are human beings too (even though they may not act like it or you want to believe it). Many times bosses feel threatened by people and then act badly towards them. Sometimes bosses feel that their job is threatened by other peoples demonstrated abilities. It may sound silly but many times you can diffuse a bad boss situation by asking their help as a mentor or for input to your personal problems (even if you do not care what they think). This makes you appear less threatening to a boss and more of a human being and not just an employee.
