i am thinking about sub-teaching and i'd like any experiences anyone has had with substitute teaching.
some of my questions are:
-is the pay decent? i know it'll depend on the school district, etc... BUT in general, do you feel that you got paid properly for the work?
-how much control do you have over when you work? for exmple, if you turn down a spot one day b/c you have other things going on, then will the mark you in a negative way and prevent the schools calling you in the future?
-how much do you really teach when you sub or do you allow it to be more like a study hall?
thanks!

I know a friend who has done short as well as long term sub teaching. Some things she mentioned was that she disliked about was they often call you at 6am for that day. She often laid out an outfit all ready to jump into when she got the call. She was afraid to turn the job down, yes, or get a reputation for being "picky" or they just won't call you as often. Lots of times the teacher will have things prepared for you if she knows she will be gone in advance, but sometimes she'd walk in with not an iota of a lesson plan ready and she had to "wing it". The kids didn't give her much respect as a sub either. She frequently had a bag of lessons or a book or something ready that she could take with her for the appropriate grade if nothing was prepared for her. Hope this helps. Not sure about the pay.

well teacher in the u,.k have been complaining about pay..especially the ones living in london..cosof the cost of housing..but now with new schemes to help keyworkers..the teaching proffession is gaining a new boost...i did some part time teaching and found it so satisfying..the giving side of it gives back somuch..when you see the response of the students..it has its weight in gold..i would say go for it..but find out all the relevant info in your area first before making a final decision..good luck..

i also have a friend who subs, and she is constantly called. sometimes she has to leave her phone off the hook! its great if you don't need benefits, and where i live you just need a bachelors degree,, in anything,.. doesn't matter. there is a shortage of teachers, and unfortunatly schools cannot hire as many full time bacause of the governments money situation.. so here we go using more and more subs, with no experience in the teaching field. but if you are a licensed teacher, and just want something to do partime, its got great pay, and basically your just babysitting.
