Are Cranky Co-Workers as Contagious as the Flu??

Hey Click Me...I'm Cranky - Like a bad infection, others’ crankiness spreads and threatens your otherwise pleasant personality. Always remember a Smile is contagious too..lol

Let’s face it some peoples’ mood swings can gnaw at your sanity. And like a bad infection, others’ crankiness spreads and threatens your otherwise pleasant personality. You will do anything to escape their subtle harassment and frequent emotional outbursts. Other peoples’ crankiness can become your own liability. They are sucking the JOY out of your job. Cranky coworkers and clients can deteriorate morale, lower productivity, and scare you away. Any thoughts on this?

Isn't is amazing how one person can destroy the entire dynamics of an office or gathering! And why do we let them do it? Is being cranky so much more sared? We dare to ask others who are happy what's up. Why don't we do the same with the cranky ones? We should tell them to leave it at home. If you have to be at work anyway you may as well have some fun is what I say.

Often times it ticks me off when I am feeling great and having a good day, than someone cranky comes along and decides that everything that has gone wrong in their day is my fault and they start ripping me a new one. Um..ok, it's not my fault if the boss decided to pee in this person's wheaties while doing somersaults, backflips, or just about anything you can think of. It just seriously dampens the mood for anyone Negativity is rather easy to spread I believe. That's why I try to stay as positive as possible and keep smiling, just ignore the fact that now this person is tied to the nearest office chair with duct tape over their mouth...lol

Bad attitudes spread like wildfire and can be just as destructive. I left my last job partly because I could not stand being around so many whiners. The funny thing is, it really ticked them off when they could not ruin my mood. lol

Isn't that weird, I've known people too that seemed to thrive on it. I guess that's why they say "misery loves company"...lol

Yes, other people's moods will reflect to your own, at work, in the home, anywhere. At work, we must be self motivators, and be thankful that we don't have to live with those people, and pray for them.

THey really are a pain in the a**!;) With the positive atmospehere we bring to our workplace, there can always be one who's always trying to mess with our moods. Especially those bosses who bring their personal problems at work, they always try to abuse their superiority. They are like 'viruses' who infects us all and ruins our day, affecting our jobs and our moods as well. I hope I have some medicine to take up and suppress those 'viruses' that they carry around them, the only thing I can to deal with it is dodge or evade them. It's hard to find a cure for it!;)

Maybe we could come up with some kind of "Mood Enhancing" spray. Whenever the propblem people are around we could give them a squirt and make them happy..lol

Yes, I realised in a previous job if those around you have a negative attitude, you too can start to feel it. You definitely start to feel the negative energy. It's up to you to not succumb to that and keep your energy high. Just try not to bother with those people.

Oh, I try not to let them bother me. But they can destroy the morale of everyone around them. I've seen people quit their job because they can't stand the stress of working with a cranky co-worker.

My only thought is that I agree immensely. I guess that is one of the upsides to my second job, especially. Even though my clients might get a little grumpy, it is like a little storm cloud, then it is gone and their faces are like sunshine. Hard to stay down, when they are up. Maybe we should be the antidote to gloom in our own situations.

You are totally right, buddy - happens at my workplace all the time. i'm a manager so i especially despise such people as they not only lower the morale of my team members but even mine ! i somtimes get them shifted to other departments (if counseling doesn't work).. they are worse than the flu, trust me !

That is an excellent observation. You are so right that the moods of others can infect all of those around them. It works both ways, with good moods and bad moods. Take care that you don't let others destroy your good feelings. You can't really control others and their moods, but you can preserve your good cheer and refuse to become infected with all the negative vibes. "Sucking the joy out of your job" is the perfect definition. You are ahead of the game by becoming aware that there is much negativity surrounding you. Now you can shield yourself from it as best you can. Believe it or not, more crankiness and emotional outbursts will lead to even more of it. It is the law of attraction where the disruptors will attract more disruption and calmer emotions will attract more calm. It is far easier for the negative side to gain control of the workplace because so many are negative in their thinking to begin with. But you always have a choice to remain steadfast in your fellings about yourself.

I agree with you 100 % and this is soo annoying as i too have worked with people such as this as well! I think that such a thing however should not be allowed in a work environment as i think that while you are at wokr no matter how much you are not smiling on the inside you should still be smiling and pleasant on the outside regardless. Personal life is just that PERSONAL so keep it at home and out of the work site!!
