Kamikazee Tops 2007 MYX Nominees List

Funny guys finish first, to mangle a time-worn phrase. Comedic rockers Kamikazee dominated this years's 2007 MYX Music Awards nominations list with 10 nominations spread across most of the major categories, including Runners up are Sandwich and Sponge Cola, with 7 and 6 nominations, respectively. This means that Jay Contreras and the rest of the boys have demolished established recording acts like Nina, Gary V, True Faith, Sarah Geronimo, and Regine Velasquez, in an unequivocal demonstration that rock bands continue to rule the roost over pop idols in this country. Sponge Cola and Sandwich's strong showing also reinforced that idea. (And in our minds, that is a very good thing). The MYX awards are the last video awards standing, due to the unexpected demise of MTV Philippines early this year. As we hear it, MTV will be coming back sometime in 2007, as a franchise back in veteran radio guy Francis Lumen's control. But for now, ABS-CBN's MYX has the 24 music video channel gig pretty much to itself. Back to the names on the list - we have absolutely no effing idea how these nominees were chosen. (ask us about the Awit Awards and the NU Rock Awards and we're the self-proclamed experts in the field). But we do know how the winners are selected, and it's basically by popular vote, using SMS. The mechanics are basically to text: "MMA" (space) (candidate number) and send to 2366 - that's the same access code whether you're on Smart, Sun, or even TXTPOWER's favorite network, Globe. So let's say that your all time favorite artist is Sandwich. Not only does this demonstrate very good taste in our book, but you register your approval by texting MMA 13 and send this to 2366. At P 2.50 a pop, we can expect that ABS-CBN Interactive is rubbing its hands with glee at the prospect of incoming revenues, but it's the only way to vote. No Internet voting, it all boils down to an SMS vote. As our favorite character on Sesame Street used to say, "That's the way the cookie crumbles." The MYX Music Awards will take place on March 15 at the AFP Theater.
