For me it depends on the age - my daughter will be 1 this year & we'll just be having a little family event. Immediate family & a little gathering at my Mum's place - more than likely!
If it were her 16th, 18th or 21st we'd have a bigger celebration. Family, friends & loud music!
When she's in her early ages & has friends, we'll have b'day parties for her & her friends with games, music & such!
There will be older milstones too where i think a celebration will happen but in between those numbers, quiet doo's are probably suitable!

yea i do. when we have parties here with my close family, we dont care how old our birthday family member is. they still throw a party for them and they celebrate it. except, when its for celebrating a kids in our family a birthday party, there is sweet/candy cake, candies, pinatas, jumper, etc. when its an adult in our family members birthday, then we celebrate it just with normal cake and dancing without the candy, pinata and stuff. we still dance in kids parties, though

I think it is up to each family to decide what works for them. I personally enjoy having a family dinner (for the adults) and having a more festive party for the children. It is fun to make the person feel like all eyes are on them and to make it obvious that they are very special to us! I have not thrown a big birthday party with friends and such for my little ones (they are 3 & 5) yet, but I would like to have a bit more festive one this year as they will be old enough to appreciate it all more. My kids were born on Oct. 15th and Oct. 16th so it adds another element for me. Do I celebrate with one extra special party or do I separate them and have two?
