Is giving up ok?

I've been a musician for a decent amount of time now, and I've come to the realization that being in a signed band is a rare and, not necassarily, a good thing. I'll be happy sitting in my room writing music. But how much gratification is in that when no one else is listening to share the emotions involved in the songs? Isn't being in a signed band the best way to get the music out there, or is putting music on the internet good enough and hoping people listen?
